A Short History of the Giltman Family

Before coming to Iasi, Romania Avram sin Iosep (Abraham Giltman) might have lived in the Ukraine. Other Giltman family members lived in Zinkov, Podolia, Ukraine. Gittle Giltman's death certificate indicates that she was born in Russia. Reb Abraham, according to his wife's headstone, was the Gabbi to Rabbi Isaiah Shor and he was also a clerk to Rabbi Haim Shor. He is buried in the Jewish cemetery in Iasi, according to Abraham Ghiltman who lives in Iasi today.

Here is buried:
The dear faithful woman, the
crown of our heads, she was generous
of heart, who did many good
deeds to all and put forth her hand
to the poor in time of trouble to save
them (and) help (them). May there
always be an everlasting remembrance
of her name:
Mrs. Gittle Daughter of Reb Tzvi,
wife of Reb Abraham, who was (the)
Gabbi with the righteous man,
our teacher Reb Yishai (or Yishayahu-
Isaiah) Shore (of) Jassy Romania.
She died Ellul 10, 5684 (1924), more
than 86 years Old.

According to Donald Richter of Ramat Hasharon, Israel, Rabbi Isaiah Shor (Schor/Schorr) was Rabbi and ABD (Av Bet Din - Head of the Religious Court) of Iasi (Jassy) Romania from 1850 until his death, at 98 yrs of age, in 1879. He was the scion of a branch of a well known Jewish rabbinic/literary dynasty - maintaining his ancestral tradition as author of Klil Tiferet (pub 1868) and Hazon Isaiah (pub 1903); before Iasi he had been Rabbi and ABD in the towns of Horodenka, Khatin, Dalina and Szbarasz. He was a highly respected and well known rabbi who corresponded with the greatest (Jewish) sages of his time. In the 1860's he ran into conflict with the Jewish intelligensia of Iasi by virtue of his opposition to various reforms, put forth by the government and affecting Jewish community life. Under pressure of a vocal opposition, and with government sanction, he was removed from his post for a short time - but was quickly reinstated. R'Isaiah was probably the most famous rabbi of Iasi and any (close) link to him would be worthy of note - even on a gravestone.
