1918 Diary

Sara L. Giltman

Sunday, Sept. 1, 1918 

Got up about 10 o'clock & knocked around. Jack came in about 1.30  a.m. Gertie Bernstein called & I promised to see her about 3 or 4 p.m. Was over to see Flora this morning with Uncle Jack. Helped her with ruffling on dress. Hattie & I left at 3.45 & went to Gertie's. Promised to meet mother at Grandma's later. Met Gertie, her mother & sister. She's looking bad. Called up Arthur Pell but he was not in. Left my name. Met Uncle, Aunt & Grannie. Mother children & Uncle Jack came in. Later went went to Aunt Goldstein's. Met them all. Some bunch. Hattie & I went to the Rialto. Saw good movie  & fine music. Jack met us later & took in a cabaret show. Was very tired when we got home.
Labor Day
Monday, Sept. 2, 1918 


Got up about 10 a.m. but Jack wouldn't let us sleep. Flora & her husband came in. Hattie & I got dressed. Grannie treated with ice cream. Flora read letter from H.J. Cohen & thought it was fine. She was surprised  when I said I would turn him down. Jack, Hattie & I went up 5th Ave. in buses. I would like to live in N.Y. if I had a car & money. Met Mother. Left my purse at Hattie's & Jack will bring it home. Made 9 o'clock train home. Some crowd. Got in at 12.15 & taxi took us home. Was very tired & sleepy.
 
 

 

Tuesday, Sept. 3, 1918 

Rather chilly this morning. Did not have much to do. Let Miss Carey read H.J. Cohen's letter also part of my answer to same. Called S.R. & she promised to be over. Went home by S. Western. Rec'd. mail from Louis Goldman, also announcement of Miss Peter's marriage on Sat. Aug. 31. Went to dentist. Also pur. black velvet turban for daily use. Hannah Furman called for S.R. She went to Lillian Rosen's & her brother was called in draft. Joe Rosen (Martha's brother) also called. Went to Crystal Palace.
Wednesday, Sept. 4, 1918 

Was somewhat busy this a.m. & I enjoyed working. Nothing much new. Went to have my hair washed. Met Hannie Furman & Gussie on 4th St. Have to make an appointment before I can have my hair done. Spoke to Ethel. S.R. working.
 

 

Thursday, Sept. 5, 1918 


Sent some New Year cards to friends. Wrote Ed. Mr. Clark said he tried to see Miss Carter but she was out. He also said if we were as busy as today he wouldn't let me go to Hirsch. Laughed. Pur. a sterling pin at  Dubrow's also had my ring cleaned. Went to Red Cross. S.R. didn't go. 


Friday, Sept. 6, 1918 

Spoke to Miss Porter & my increase has gone thru - $2.00. Re:  matter of transferring me to Mr. Hirsch she will look into the matter further & advise me. E.S.C. off at 4.00 p.m. Called S.R. Sam H. is coming over & they will walk over to see me. Recd. mail from Sam Auerback & Joe Goodrich wishing me a Happy New Year. Sent cards to my friends. S.R. failed to show up. She later advised that Sam H. & Linda were over.
Saturday, Sept. 7, 1918

Decided to take a walk to S.R.'s & met Lillian, Ethel & Sara walking towards our home. Walked over to Hannah's with them & we all took a long walk. Hannah, Gussie & I saw "Nancy Lee" (Charlotte Walker). Was disappointed in the show. S.R. & Ethel & Sam & Linda went out together. Recd. card from Sam Miller also Naomi Rosenfeld.
Sunday, Sept. 8, 1918 

Did not downstairs until 12.30. Rain & very dreary out. S.R. & Ethel came over. We walked back to her home & sat around & ate awhile. Got back about 10.15. Ann & Irwin's friends were over & I stayed with them awhile.

 

Monday, Sept. 9, 1918 

Rather cool out today. Jack Allen was in the office to know whether I had picked a girl for him yet. Said no. He is going to make me keep the appointment, I think. Said it was too cold for canoeing even if  no one available. I really was kidding; but he thought I was serious, so I decided to go. Irwin & Sam Winer left early, & Allen & I followed . Couldn't find trace of the kids so we hired a canoe & could only keep it one hour. Sat around the Park a while & left around 11.30 & {short hand} & rec'd. mail from Miss Harris, Jules Sigmond & card from S.R.
Tuesday, Sept. 10, 1918 

Still cool today. Had plenty to do. C.C. Adams  was in for awhile at noon. Met Selma Melon in car. Her friend left for overseas. Spoke to S.R. over phone. Bernie enlisted in the Navy & was called this morning. He had a party at the house last night & S.R. called to have me go but I was out with J.E Allen. Asked Miss Parker whether I could take my typewriter with me while I went with Hirsh & she said yes. Wrote Minnie Cornwell. Went to dentist & then to Franklin. Not very good picture.


Wednesday, Sept. 11, 1918 

Still cold & I came to work without a coat. ESC. doesn't think I will be able to secure a transfer. That I was needed in the dept. etc., etc. It certainly is provoking to have people change their minds so often. Finished 45" centre piece (colored work). It certainly looks fine. Took 3 mo. but I didn't work on it for about 5 weeks. Wrote Bessie Fields. Mailed New Year's card to Jules. Rec'd. letter & card from Harry Cohen. He certainly is a wonderful writer. Ethel called & she & I went to her cousin Jennie's house. Met Ann, Lillie, Sara R. Aunt May even there. Had a pretty nice time,. Pur. bottle of cashmere bouquet - 75 cents in Chenkin's. Good nite. 
Thursday, Sept.  12, 1918 

Irwin {short hand} Mr. Clark called J.G. Hirst re. me. Told him to let the matter rest for awhile anyway. Quite a few men were taken off exception list today. Everyone between 18 & 46 incl. have to register today. Some excitement . This will give the U.S. some army & I hope it is big enough to wipe the hun  off the map. Received letter from Mrs. Sacks. Pur. white waist with blue collar & cuffs on 5th & McKean. A new place opened & I was the first customer. Mother & I intended going to Camden, but as she went to get Anna shoes & a hat she didn't get back till late. I went to Red Cross. Good night.
 Friday, Sept. 13, 1918 

Someone told draftsmen that deferred classification would be canceled Oct. 1st. The general assumption is that Miss Pauling told. It's too bad when a girl in her position can't hold her tongue. Traul & I went down Warehouse 101 in bus. Met Hirsh. Adams took us around to see the Iverstock & Saccuroppn. Some class to them. Called S.R. & told her to be ready early. Lillie & Ethel came with us & we saw Potash & Purlmuter in "Business before Pleasure". Pretty funny. C. C. Adams called to know whether I would go mach. riding with him on Saturday. Said yes.

Saturday, Sept. 14, 1918 

Ann's Birthday
All  men got docked for Saturday last - holiday & are raising a rumpus. Adams & I took a 58 mile drive thru Overbrook, Bryn Mawr, Norristown ,Valley Forge etc. I enjoyed it very much. Rec'd. letter from Louis Goldman, Balt., Md. Jack came in & returned my pocketbook. He left in about 1/2 hour. Called S.R. but her phone must have been out of order, as I could not get her. Went to dentist, then to Franklin. Showed Jack HJC's letter & he laughted. Must send Pop, Bee, Betty birthday cards.

Sunday, Sept. 15, 1918

Got up about 10.30. Did some washing & bathed & dressed the kids. Sara & Ethel came over. We went to Hannah's & then back to S.R.'s. Harry Cohen & Mr. Ulich came over. Some surprise. Harry looks much thinner then when he left, but looks rather good in uniform. Took me home. Wanted me to go to Keith's tomorrow with his sister & himself. Said no. Have a very bad toothache. Forgot to send Pop a card and present. Mail cards for girls. Good nite.

Monday, Sept. 16, 1918

Bessie's & Beatrice's birthday. Day of Atonement. Am Fasting. Went to S.R.'s about 12:15 as she promised to go up town with me. She was away with Ethel. I was very cross so I took a walk alone. Rec'd. mail from Anna Goldfarb to get tickets to the theatre. Took a nap this afternoon. Harry Cohen came over about 6 o'clock quite unexpectedly. He saw Sara & Sam at Keith's buying tickets. He didn't mention the subject & touched upon {short hand}. Wouldn't promise. Went to Franklin. Rec'd. New Year's card from Mr. & Mrs. W. Sacks, Balt., Md. 
Tuesday, Sept. 17, 1918

Had a festered thumb & paid the nurse a visit. Feel rather sick on a/c of not being able to sleep last night. Wrote Ed enclosing picture of 25,000 Camp Dix boys in Liberty Bell Form. America rejects Austian Peace Offer. Selma Melon asked me to join a sewing circle. Said yes. Wrote Louis Goldman of Balti. Selma & I went to post office & walked home from there. Rec'd.  New Year card from Gertie Bernstein. Anna & I saw "Leave It To Jane". Very good. Pop got 3 ties, 6 pr. socks. Thank G-d for for birthdays. Good nite, I'm tired.


Wednesday, Sept. 18, 1918

Raining hard this morning. Wrote L. Wasco. Harry thought he was in action now. I hope he got out without injury. Wrote him this afternoon. Spoke to Miss Porter re: transfer outcome & she said Mr. Fuller wouldn't consider it & to stay where I am. Miss Albertson asked me to advise the girls of our division about a mass meeting to be held  at Metropolitan Opera House - of Women War Workers. Don't think I'll go. Went to dentist & then to Franklin. Saw Ray in "A Nine O'clock Town". Fair. Sent Betty a belated card for her birthday. Will write L.W. later. H.J. Cohen will also write. Am getting tired of writing. Oh well. Sent Pop a card, also Beatrice.
Thursday, Sept. 19, 1918


Big block & no cars. Crowds are terrible on 3rd & 4th St. Got in tho at 8:57 & was advised that there would be a military drill at 5.30 p.m. in front of Cafeteria Bldg. Think I'll attend. Crocheted & embroidered some today. Finger sore a/c splinter & cut. Drilling from 5.30 to 6.15. I believe I will like it. Hiked home from 3rd & Jackson. Rec'd. mail from Harry J.C. also Lou Goldman - His father died on Tuesday Sept. 17th. Sorry to hear it. Pressed some waists & skirts. Went to dentist. S.R. & Ethel came over to see why I didn't attend Red Cross. Promised to call her on phone tomorrow.
Friday, Sept. 20,1918

Rain again this morning. Am not busy so I crocheted & embroided. Ans. Harry's letter. Feel sick in stomach. I suppose it 's because I have to get sure(?). Nurse gave me some pills & they are certainly working. Feel cold & blue all day on a/c weather. Called S.R. She, Ethel & 3 other couples are going to Camp Dix on Sunday to see Dave Ginsburg. Still raining so I went to Franklin. Sent Louis Goldman a letter of condolence on a/c of his father's death. Good nite.


Saturday, Sept. 21, 1918 


Saw "Chu Chin Chow" with Miss Goldfarb this afternoon. Pretty good. Rec'd mail from Jules, Sigmond, & Ed. Both were very cheerful letters. Mother & I took a walk on South St. & returned.
Sunday, Sept. 22, 1918

Ans. Ed's letter. Called Fannie Mazer to know whether she would be home today. She said yes. Mother & I went to Camden. Stayed at Aunt Katie's a while then we all went up to Ann's. Aunt read Sam's letter.
Monday, Sept. 23, 1918

Feel as tho I have a bad cold or la grippe. Wrote Sam Auerbach. Called S.R. & she promised to be over. Received letter from Lou Goldman. He will not be up for week-end & wants me to send him my picture. Sara & I went to Franklin & saw "Till I come back to you". Was rather disappointed in it as I thought it was along different lines. Was at the dentist.
Tuesday, Sept. 24, 1918

Paid nurse a visit. Dr, Young & Miss Ferris called to advise me to pay entrance fee of 25 cents for Potato Race on field day, Saturday 9/28. Feel rather punky. S.R. asked me to come over with my emb. Finished 2nd doily of Dining Room crochet set. Miss Traul will take it home to show her mother. Drilled. Had open air calistenticks - Fine. Got home late. Went to Doctor. Said I had la grippe. Went to bed 9 p.m.
Wednesday, Sept. 25, 1918

Did not go in to work today. Made devil cake. Rec'd. letter from Ed. dated Aug. 20th. Very nice. Answered. Called S.R. & Annette Goldfarb. She came for dinner & we went to S.R.'s intending to go to Keith's. S.R. expects Sam Hirshenhorn over, so we went alone. Fair show. Stopped in at S.R.'s & she & Sam took me home.
Thursday, Sept.  26, 1918

Am sore today as it is raining somewhat. Feel punky. Wrote Jules Sigmond & Louis Goldman. Felt pretty bad at 1:30 & nurse put me to bed. {short hand} Got down about 3:45. Raining somewhat this evening and mother wouldn't let me go to Red Cross. I also didn't drill. Went to dentist's however. Rec'd. letter from Gertie Bernstein - New york. Irwin passed physical examine and can enter U. of P.





Friday, Sept.  27, 1918


Somewhat cool this morning. Wrote Mr. & Mrs. Sacks of Baltimore. Good news in paper - U.S. troops adv. 7 miles - capture 12 towns, 5,000 Germans in Champagne. Penn. Boys in thick of fray. Rec'd. mail from Wasco 9/4. He is in mountains of France & well. Irwin sick with grippe. Went to S.R.'s. Lillie, Ida Stamps & another girl were there. Promised Ida to be over next Tuesday.


Saturday, Sept. 28, 1918

Was very busy this morning. Can't get Irwin's pay without a written order from him. Speakers in front of Administration Bldg. re:  4th Liberty Loan Campaign. Not much of a crowd at Athletic Meet a/c of Liberty Loan Parade. Came in 4th in 50 yd. dash & 1st in Potato Race. Had picture taken by newspaper men. Selma & Minnie Melon & Ray Arthur were there. Came home by mach. Rec'd. another letter from Wasco dated 8/26. Wrote him. S.R. promised to call me.
Sunday, Sept. 29, 1918 


Saw pictures of athletic meet in newspapers. S.R. called. She is going out with Sam. Wrote Joe Goodrich. Anna sick, sore throat.








Monday, Sept. 30, 1918


Fine out today. Fixed my files. 3rd boat launched today. Made arraignments to get Irwin's salary. S.R. said she would not go to Sewing Circle meeting. I went to dentist & then to Ray Cutler's. Was told 2 young men were around to see me & were told to come back later. Minnie & Selma Mellon came over & I did some scalloping on scarf. We went for a ride in her cousin's Ford & met Herman Zerdner & Jacobson. Herman is going away to Ky. Thursday. When we got to Boulevard it started to rain & we all got drenched. Got home 12:20.
