Rather nice out today, but cool. Caller S.R. & she said she would be over early to go to Ida Stamp's home. Had quite a bit of work. Mr. Clark not feeling very well today. Got Irwin's salary for him - Some red tape. Drilled tonight. It was fine. Received letter from Lou. Goldman. S.R. had phoned that her sister was sick & she would not be over. Pur. purple wool for a sweater. Took a bath & went to bed. Wrote Ed. - encl. potato race photo. |
Started a sweater today, but couldn't make much headway so Miss Sprogel did 2 rows of pearling for me & I got along fine after that. Mt. Clark out today - sick. No work all afternoon. Read & knitted. 2 people out in Draft Dept. with Spanish Influenza. Everybody seems to be getting it. Bernice & baby sick. Went home by Penna. R.R. Rec'd. French books from G. & Ann. Pur. silver bar pin. Went to Franklin. |

Mr. Clark still out. Doctor advised him to stay away until Monday. Miss Leonard gave me some payroll envelopes to make out. Miss Porter came in afternoon & asked whether I could help out. Said yes. Knitted awhile today. Called S.R. & we didn't know whether to go to Red Cross or not. Didn't go as Bernice is sick also Bessie (Betty). Knitted awhile & went to bed. |
Somewhat cool today. Abe not feeling so well so I sent him over to be inoculated. Some surprise. Met Mr. Schlissinger (formerly of Gulf) & spoke to him awhile. He is in uniform & at Delaware. He is a cousin of Mr. Benjamin's (Mech. squid Chief). Rec'd. card from H.J. Cohen to the effect that he is very busy & hasn't time to write & for me not to wait for answers. He also rec'd. mail from L. Wasco. |

Saturday, Oct. 5, 1918 Got my first inoculation re: - grippe - this morning. Was told to come back again on Tuesday. Wrote H.J. Cohen - incl. Hog Island news. Called S.R. & I will meet her between 2 & 2.30 in Gimbel's waiting room. Pur. hair nets, writing paper, shampoo. Had heels mended & had to wait over hr. Missed S.R. Saw her at her home. Ida (her sister) is better. Children feeling somewhat better. Knitted on sweater awhile. Started a letter to Ed. & couldn't finish as I was too sleepy. Will finish tomorrow. |
Sunday, Oct. 6, 1918 Washed my hair, also some clothes of mine. Raining - (3:30). Went to S.R.'s at 4:15 & knitted a while. Had supper there. Sara, Ethel & I walked to Furman's. Got weighed 122 lbs. Hat & suit. We then walked to Broadway & Walnut on Broad to Mkt. Saw New war map of western front & a large seaplane in front of City Hall. S.R. wouldn't walk at first without a man. She certainly has her narrow view points on. that subject. |

Mr. Clark still out. Francis took a turn for the worse & is sick again. Knitted some on my sweater. Walked home from Jackson St. Finished Ed's letter. Saw quite a lot of funerals. Lots of people are sick & dying from Spanish Influenza. All movies, theatres, salons, & schools quarantined. I t sure is (hell) over here as well as over there. Germany asked for Peace but I don't think U.S. will accept. |
Started sleeves on my sweater. Got 2nd. inoculation & It certainly was tiresome sitting in office all day. Clark still out sick. My arm is getting swollen & somewhat stiff. No calisthenics today - only marching & squad formations. Francis still sick. Knitted awhile, but 3 or 4 stitches slipped off needles & I couldn't go further. Pressed a while. Fixed chemise straps. Wrote Lou Goldman. |

Some crowd on corner waiting for car today. Got as far as 18th. & cars blocked - accident ahead. Fog is so thick it couldn't be cut with a knife. Miss Bordman, Abe & I walked to 13th. & took subway surface to 49th. & over on # 45. Got in at 9.50 & Miss Leonard ok'd my time card. Took a walk this noon time. Miss Leonard asked me to help her & I did. Knitted awhile today. Mailed Hog Island News to Lou Goldman of Baltimore. Rec'd. mail from Hattie & Jules Sigmund. Went to S.R.'s. She rec'd. mail from B.Z. |

Came in only for an hour. Asked Dr. Young whether Pneumonia Inoculation was any good after the patient had it & she said Yes. Worked around the house & knitted.

Baby feeling a trifle better I think. Was pretty busy this morning. Called S.R. & was told to meet her at 1:30 in Wanamaker's. She came with one of the girls we met in Betterton. Did some shopping. Looked for a waist, pur. cream & went home. Phone Camden to put up a candle for mother's father. Meyer's wife had a girl. Ann not feeling very well. Went to S.R.'s & knitted. She pur. black wool for a sweater. |

Babe a trifle better today. Phoned Camden to let them know. S.R. can't come over as Sam will be down to see her. Knitted quite a bit today. Played cards with the kids & won 12 ¢. Wanted to go for a walk, but couldn't get anyone to go with me. |
Mr. Clark still out sick. Knitted some today. Miss Leonard stopped in to inquire whether I would help sell Liberty Bonds. Said Yes. Wrote Hattie. S.R. said she would try to come over. Did not do so, however. Frances feeling feverish again. Dr. gave her another inoculation. Ann has the grippe. Phoned her boss. |

Mr. Clark still out. Miss Peters came in noontime. She looked well, but dressed too old. Left 1.30. Settled my Liberty Bonds (3&4). Pur. towel. Mary Mellon (Selma's sister) died, also Lester Rothchild. Gosh, everybody seems to be sick or dying. Stella Freed buried today. Rec'd. letter from Ed. He has been over the top 3 times & is o.k. Ans. him also sent copy of part of his letter to "Bulletin" & "Public Ledger". Mother got sick, but not seriously. Francis feeling somewhat better, I think. |

Mr. Clark was in for about 20 min. yesterday after I had gone. Called Mildred Goodrich to inquire about Sam & his mother told me he was in France. Poor boy, he was only in camp 2 weeks. Left about 20 min. of 11 & got home 10 of 12. Rec'd. pictorial booklet from Herman Zeidner. Ans. He is at Fort. Thos. Ky. Washed & feel all in. Dr. said Francis was about the same. |
Miss Traub didn't {short hand} out for {short hand} Miss Leonard asked where {short hand} afraid to do so. I had Miss Baurer ok it. No mail today. Ann feeling somewhat better. Played cards & went to bed early.

Mr. Clark came in about 11 a.m. Called S.R. & she said she will be unable to meet me in town. Tried to buy a coat but could get nothing decent less then $50.00 & I think it is outrageous. Ethel told me that Jules Sigmond was in town as his brother died. He had to dig his own grave too. Very sad. Knitted a while on my sweater. |
Washed my hair. Cleaned parlor. Moved piano where sofa was & vice versa. Started to rain in afternoon. Mother bought me a bathrobe of Indian design (Very warm) for my birthday. Played cards with Ann & one of her boy friends. Wrote Mildred Goodrich & Lou Goldman. |

Called Ann's office to advise them she was still ill. Wrote Gertie Bernstein & Wasco. Feel awful queer today as tho something happened. Hope nothing serious. Went home via Penn // & walked from there. Recd. 2 letters from Ed dated 9/24 & 10/1. Very nice. Also a letter from Harry Cohen. He is in Georgia now. He surely is some flowery speaker. Francis feeling very weak. Dr. can't imagine what is the trouble. Ans. Ed's letters with one 13 pages long. |
Didn't make good connections today & got in at 8.55. Went to dentist & was told to come again when he would fill the teeth. Wrote Harry Cohen. Drilled for a change. Got Right about Squads & had lots of fun. Rec'd. card from Harry Cohen from Hancock. Jules Sigmond called me up to make an appointment to meet me at W. Philly Station Thurs. He is going back south. Mildred Goodrich also called me & gave me Sam's address. |

Received service pins today. Knitted some today. Mr. Fuller said some changes would be made soon. Got sore this P.M. & certainly was sick when I got home. Men in car annoyed me dreadfully, remarking about my knitting etc. Mother had to take Francis downstairs on a/c of father going to work. Finished body of sweater & started cuff. S.R. said she would be over tomorrow evening. |
Miss Traul rec'd. a letter from her boyfriend. He is in the hospital - ruptured. She is very much upset & I don't blame her. Mr. Clark out part of day looking up jobs for draftsmen. I did a lot of knitting. Started a letter to Ed. Met Jules Sigmond at W. Philly Station & kissed him good-bye. He went back to Georgia. Sweater is all finished but collar. S.R. never came over nor did she phone me. Rec'd. letter from Gertie Bernstein - N.Y. to the effect that Harry Pell died of pneumonia last Tuesday. Can hardly believe it. |

Friday, Oct. 25, 1918 Was late this morning. Mr. Anthony & Mr. Fuller are to be transferred Monday. Miss Sprogel to go with them. Miss Traul is sore & I don't blame her. Told Mr. Clark I wanted to be placed before things come to a climax. He will look things up & advise me. Finished Ed's letter. Abe & I walked home. Met S.R. Went to Rosins with her & she bought a red hat. Very nice. Pur. Gray shoes at Slifkins. S.R. will be over tomorrow. |
Saturday, Oct. 26, 1918 S.R. can't meet me this P.M. Had photos taken. $2.00 1/2 doz. Met Hannah Furman, Gussie & her sister-in-law. Tried to get a coat. I saw something in Silverman's I liked at $55. S.R. came over & we talked & I knitted a while. Met Gussie Furman on 4 & South. Had very interesting conversation with her. S.R. will call me up tomorrow if she is not keeping an appointment with Sam Hershenhorn. Sent 100 {short hand} Wanamaker's Paris store. |

Pushed clock back one hour. Got up at 9:30. Finished my sweater. Abe took some pictures of me. S.R. said to be over. Uncle Frank & Aunt Kate & Jack (Auerback) came over in Fannie's car. Jack & I went to S.R.'s. We then took a walk while they ate supper. Lillian & Ethel felt simple & cut up quite a bit. Promised to call S. R. on Tuesday. |
Walked to Jackson St. this morning. Wore my sweater. Miss Carey had lunch with us. Wrote Ed, Lou, Harry & Sam Auerback. Feel restless again. Wish I had more work. Recd. card from Harry Cohen. Baked cookies & cake. Jack came in & tasted them. |

Tuesday, Oct. June 29, 1918 Was early for a change. Recd. proofs of my photo. Change of opinion as to which is best. Forgot my dental appointment. Next Friday is the best he can do. Embroidered a little while. Miss Cary is now working for Mr. Dick, plant engineer. Austria asks for a separate peace. Pres. Wilson knocked a/c of his speech asking to renominate a Democratic Congress. Drilled tonight. No mail. Showed mother proofs of pictures. Ordered the one not smiling. Wrote Ed. Want to see if I can write everyday for one week. Francis feeling much better. |
Wednesday, Oct. 30, 1918 Irwin's birthday. Will get him a razor. Crocheted on a towel. Called S.R. to inquire whether she wants to go to see Ziegfield Follies. She is to see Maytime (I suppose with Sam) on Saturday evening. Miss Traul & I are debating as to whether we should go to sailor's & soldier's dance on Friday or theatre to see Ziegfield Follies. Recd. letter from Joe Goodrich. He is at the front. Wrote Eddie. Went to Franklin. Saw Ether Clayton in "The Girl Who Came Back". S.R. called. She ordered tickets for the Follies. |

Held up on bridge & I can in late. Got some figuring to do and the morning passed quickly. Liberty Sing Rally this noon. Everyone joined. Wrote Ed. Miss Porter was in to see about a table & I asked her re: transfer. She thought I might be put in Mr. Dicks' office. E.S.C. -said no -to do his & Kings & Tandy's work. Mr. Clark & I had a discussion re: amt. a man should make before he gets married. Recd. card from Sam Auerbach acknowledging receipt of my letter of August 25. Wrote Ed. Mother & I tried to buy a coat, but I got material for one instead. |
