Wednesday, May 1, 1918 

Recd. card from Ingersoll Watch Co. that I should remit 5.00 cost of repairing watch. Took this matter up with Mr. Gold (where I purchased it). He promised to pay half in cash I was compelled to remit. Washed & pressed hankies & tried to start pink sweater, but I didn't know how to purl.
Thursday, May 2, 1918 

Didn't meet girls this morning in Subway. Liberty Loan rally in office & $4000 additional was subscribed. J.G.H. said OK to have this Saturday afternoon off. Good. Started to make Ann a pair of bloomers, but was called downstairs & met Aunt Lena's nephew Morris, who is being called to Camp on Sunday. Went with them to help her select a spring coat. Saw one I liked, but it was more than I cared to spend. Trimmed her hat with some flowers. He had some pictures & gave me one. Recd. card from Wasco. He has been transferred to Camp Lee, Va.
Friday, May 3, 1918 

Started to knit rose silk sweater, but couldn't purl properly so I ripped it. Everyone in office pur. another Liberty Bond. I told Adams if he would take another one I would.. He did & now I guess I'll have to make good. Called Minnie Gross in evening & found her out. Told her mother I would be over on Tuesday evening. Called S.R. but she was at Dentist's. Left word for her to call me tomorrow. Went ot Franklin.



Saturday, May 4, 1918 

Missed shuttle & walked in with Irwin & Mr. Watt. Left button home & had to be identified at Pass Dept. Pur. another Liberty Bond; making 2 of the third. Called S.R. & was told to meet her at 2 P.M. in Gimbles. We shopped all afternoon & certainly got tired out. She came over our house in the evening. Some one called me on the phone, but when I got there they had hung up. Wonder who it was. Fell with Francis & hurt my elbow & bruised my knee. S.R. said B.Z. & bunch of boys would be over tomorrow & not to forget to come also.

Ann & Irwin at a picnic today. Jack called me up to say that Sam Goodrich & he wanted to come over in the evening & whether it would be OK. Said yes & I would bring them to the party at S.R.'s. They came over about 8:30 & we went. Some bunch of kids. I didn't know half of them. Ann, Ida & Lillian were there. B.Z., Irving Rubinstein, Geo Jackson & one or two others I knew. Didn't have such a wonderful time. Jack took me home. Stopped into Wrams & had some cream. Jack {short hand}


Monday, May 6, 1918 

Feel just a little better today. Received my watch from N.Y. {short hand} Went to Dentist's & then to bed.
 
 
 
 
 
 

 

Tuesday, May  7, 1918 

Knitted quite a bit today & am feeling somewhat tired. Stayed in at noon time as I brought my lunch. Miss Trammel & I signed up for dinner & got together meeting on Thursday, May 9th - 50¢ Re: athletics, etc. Recd. notice of Mrs. Beans removal to 8th St. I don't care as I doubt whether I'll give her any more orders for clothes. Went to Minnie Gross's.  Elsie Gillies there also Minnie's brother Bill. We took a long walk & then went back to her home. Had some strawberries & cream & made an appointment to go to see Harts of the World with them next Friday.
Wednesday, May 8, 1918

Ans. Wassco's card by writing a nice long letter. S.R. came over & I taught her how to knit. Took a walk down 5th St. Stopped in to have some cream & then walked home.





Thursday, May 9, 1918 


Recd. card from Sam Auerback at Camp Dix. Shock nearly knocked me over. Also recd. card from Joe Goodrich stating that the ship on which he sailed arrived safely "over there". Stayed at Hog Island in evening & had dinner in Blue Room. Pretty good. We were allowed to eat 2 on 1 ticket - 25¢ ea. Later we had a meeting at the Industrial Rel. Bldg. Discussed uniforms, athletics, etc. Signed up for all but horseback riding & music. Went home on 7:45 shuttle.
Friday, May 10, 1918

Flag raising at ship way # 41 so I pur. 15¢ lunch (fine) & had same at office. It is some walk to # 41. Met Mr. Grodinski on the way. The following were there: Nora Bayes, Irving Fisher, Lieut. Young of Canadian Forces, Butch McDermott, etc. Hog Is. band played & quartet sang fine. Enjoyed same immensely. Were picked up in machine on way back. Phoned S.R. & promised to be over in the evening. Knitted a while. Girls decided to go home via boat. It was very nice for me as I got off at Bainbridge & Del. Ave. Rain. Went to Franklin. Recd. mail from Bime Fields re: Saturday.
Saturday, May 11, 1918 

Had Miss Sprogel call Minnie Conwell & was told to meet her at 69th St. at 2 P.M. Miss Tranel  {short hand} Picked flowers with Bessie, Clara, Sadie, Minnie, Hanna, Annette & Miss Darden (San Francisco) then went to Miss Fields. Saw a possum & her false pocket, pigs, etc. Clara surprised us by inviting her Sunday School boys over. We had dinner there. Her father had ordered ice cream & we also had Strawberry Short Cake. Left on 10:20   as Hanna went home by machine. Met Al Cramer in #9 car coming home.


Sunday, May 12,1918

Nothing new this morning. Sent Bessie (Betty) over to S.R.'s to find out whether she could be over tonight. In as much as her Aunt Sara from Omaha was expected over she asked me to be there. Found half her relatives present also Mr. Gordinsky. Had supper there. She suggested a walk & her Uncle Jack, Aunt May, Ann & her friend, S.R., Gordinsky & I went & had some cream at De Lorenzo. Then took May & Jack home. Ann & her friend took me home.
Monday, May 13, 1918

Recd. letter from Wasco. It certainly was different from his attitude which he generally took. Called S.R. on phone & told her I wouldn't be over this evening on a/c of rain, so I went to the Franklin. Saw "Whispering Waters". Pretty fair.


 

Tuesday, May  14, 1918 

Came up with girls on #37 car. Conductor wouldn't let us in from back of car & I almost had to stand all the way down. Knitted quite a bit on my sweater. Meeting in Mess Hall at 12:30. No uniforms. & basketball game on Thursday evening. Decided to purchase a spring coat but couldn't get suited so I bought a dark blue crepe de chine dress - 416.50 - very neat. went to Dentist's. Ans. Hattie's & Sam A.'s letters today.
Wednesday, May 15, 1918 

Called S.R. but she was busy & I called again in P.M. We are to meet Mollie Wolf at Turnes's & watched her swim. It is a nice pool & all that but I doubt whether I would care to join for a season. We left early & walked all the way home. Had some cream at Whitman's.



 
Thursday, May 16, 1918 


Basket ball game tonight. Miss Travel & I stayed. Only about 12 girls showed up & I thought it was a shame. We had lots of fun & I enjoyed myself immensely. Miss Keneveski certainly was a scream. She sprained her ankle & could hardly walk. Car strike on & no cars running so a guard phoned to works mgr. & we got 2 Fords - 9 in mine & took all the girls home first & I didn't land home until 10:15 P.M. Certainly was stiff & tired. Miss A. Miller called up & thanked me for the cards. (Ann spoke to her.)
Friday, May 17, 1918 

Recd. letter from Miss Goldfarb re: position for her sister at Hog Island. Ans. same. S.R. & I went to see "Hearts of the World" but they were all sold out, so we went to Keeths & saw a pretty nice bill. Met Frances Rabinowitz on our way out. Got some coconut cones & had some cream. We certainly did carry on high.


 

Saturday, May 18, 1918

Met S.R. in Wanamaker's. Had my hair shampooed & it certainly feels fine. Paraded all around town, but couldn't match silk for my sweater. Met Ann Rosen, then Anna & Ida Stamps. S.R. & I stopped at Mrs. Bears then I went home. Found card from Sam A. inviting me to a party at Camp Dix that day. Too late to make the train. Jack was over this afternoon but I didn't see him. S.R. & I went to Graphic Sketch Club & saw exhibition. Very nice. Mr. Heinsher showed us some priceless articles, etc.
Sunday, May 19, 1918

Baked a strawberry short cake this morning. Paid Miss A. Miller a visit. She is looking fine, I think, considering what she has gone thru. Mr. Mac Knight is to be over to see her in the evening. Some class having the boss call on you. S.K. called while I was away to advise she & Ida Stamps would be over at 8 P.M.. B.Z., Irving Rubinstein & a Mr. Silver were over and S.K., Ida S. & a Miss Etta Greenberg. We had a pretty nice time. B.Z., S.R. & I discussed a picnic to be held on 6/1/18.

Monday, May 20, 1918

Feel somewhat tired this morning. Started a yoke - couldn't match silk for sweater. Went to Dentist's & then to Franklin. Wrote Lew Wasco & Sam A.








Tuesday, May 21, 1918

Met Miss Sprogel in subway. Dancing in Mess Hall. Bought lunch & enjoyed same very much. Spoke to S.R. re: picnic & promised to see her this evening if it don't rain. Certainly felt drowsy all day. I supposed its on a/c of the weather. Irwin & I went home via boat. It was a nice cool ride, but seemed rather long on a/c of not having the girls with me. Went to Dentist's & then to S.R.'s She wanted me to go to movies with her & Rose, but I was too tired. Spoke re: picnic & then had cream. Left about 10 P.M.. Ann gave me her 4 animated yokes & I gave her one of mine. S.R. gave Jack S. a line re: picnic. 
Wednesday, May 22, 1918

.Missed 8.15 shuttle but was taken up by machine at Tinicum Ave. Rain and dreary weather today. Wanted to go to Franklin, but didn't like to show. Met Sadie Glor & she showed me a picture of her friend, taken in France. She certainly felt good, poor kid. Met Mary Eskin (Gertie J's cousin) She was in the hospital 9 months but looks pretty well now.  Sent to Dentists & was told to call again tomorrow.
Thursday, May 23,1918

Spoke to S.R. over phone & she promised to be over with Ida Stamps in the evening, but when I got home I found a letter from Uncle Isadore stating he would play tonight. Father, Irwin & I went. Saw "A friend in Life". Pretty good. Wrote card to Ed {short hand} Rain this afternoon but it stopped by 5 P.M.
 
 
Friday, May 24, 1918

Am pretty tired today on a/c of not having much sleep & felt sleepy & tired all day Took a nap for about 11/2 hrs.
& felt better. Went to SK's & was very much surprised to find Phil White there. He is up on a 5 day furlough & is looking splendid. He said Ed here  was on his way to France. The shock was awful. {short hand} Jack, Irving, Anna & Ida were there. {short hand}
 
 
 
 
 



Saturday, May 25, 1918


Raining a little this morning, but I am feeling down in spirits also. Met Arthur Pell as I was getting on shuttle which surprise me very much. He wanted me to wait for him, but I couldn't see it. Met Anne Rosen in town. I pur. pink cotton but it doesn't match sweater. Pur. tickets for "Hearts of the World". Stopped in S.R.'s & told her so. Went to Dentist's. Pur wrist watch bracelet for Ann at Levin's. Very nice. S.R. & I went to see show. Cried myself sick as show was pretty sad, but I felt better after that. On way home met Harry Cohen at S.R.'s & he took me home. Met Sam Goodrich, Pauline Berman 7 Miss Wram at L, Rothchild's home. Told Sam S.R. had written him re: picnic on Sunday night & he is going with me. Harry told me his history also that he is going to enlist. Left at 2 A.M.
 Sunday, May 26, 1918

Felt very sick this morning. Father left for New York and Ann for Collegeville - school picnic. Sam Goodrich & a friend of his dropped in about 5 P.M. to talk re: picnic. Will call me up during week. S.R. called to say Phil hadn't called her but she would be over in evening. He took a walk, had some cream & stayed home. Lillian & Hannah were also there. Went to bed early, but couldn't sleep on a/c of Mr. & Mrs. Rudnick fighting & children screaming. (neighbors)





Monday, May 27, 1918

Met Arthur Peel outside of house this morning. I went to work with him. He certainly did annoy me, but I promised to go Willow Grove or Keith's with him tonight. New cafeteria opened today. Waited about 25 minutes in line & didn't care much for the place. Prices have also been raised. Got home on 4:50 train with Miss Sprogel & Corey. Met Hannah on #9 car. Recd. mail from Ingersoll  Co. re:  bill for watch. Tried to pur. smock but failed. Wind storm and rain. Wish Arthur wouldn't come, so I went to Franklin. Irwin came in about 9:30 to tell me A. Pell was home. Told him to say I couldn't be found. At 10:30 as I was coming out I met him going in. We went back home & he left at 11:15. Father back from N.Y. tonight. 
Tuesday, May 28, 1918

Left bill from Ingersoll Co. with Mr. Gold. Pur. middy at Barmask's. Missed shuttle but came up by machine. Very warm & mucky again today & it seems as tho the afternoon will never end. Basketball - got bumped, bruised & pushed, but it all comes under the head of "Sport". Recd. mail from Lew Wasco - a very nice letter. Went to Dentist's. Wrote information bureau at Camp Dix re: Ed.



Wednesday, May 29, 1918

Graduation at Tura Hall & Anna graduation. Basketball exercise caused me to get sore & discovered same in time. {short hand} Ans. Wasco's letter today & enclosed Program form "Hearts of the World". Asked Adams to come over for Commencement exercise tonight & he said he will try. Aunt Annie of N.Y. is in town today, but I didn't see her. Had scrap with our Ann then gave her watch bracelet. She was certainly dumb founded & didn't know what to say. Recd. mail from factory to the effect that they will have rose colored silk on Sat., June 1st. Went to graduation exercises & enjoyed same very much. 
Thursday, May 30, 1918

Memorial Day, but we are all working - busy getting ships for the Allies. Damp & dreary this morning. Missed shuttle by 1 minute. Then ran for office train. Got on as it was moving- charge 50¢. Miss Traub & I had punch in office. Called S.R. at Bleedens. Sam, Jule, etc. are coming over & she wants me to be over this evening. Called S.R. & told her I was too tired to see her. Went to Dentist's but he was closed. Washed some underwear & then went to bed.
Friday, May 31, 1918


Meeting at S.R.'s re picnic on Sunday. Rain this morning. Started to crochet an edge on small round centerpiece. I hought I would go home by boat at first but changed my mind. Went to S.R.'s & the bunch that is going to the picnic was there. Couldn't come to a definite understanding re:  place & decided to meet at S.R.'s Sunday 8 A.M.. Jack took me home. Had some cream at Urams. His mother's aunt died the other day.
