1918 Diary

Sara L. Giltman

Friday, March 1, 1918

Very cloudy out today & it looks like rain. Miss Miller & I went to tailors. My suit will be finished tomorrow. Am feeling sick in my stomach & I think it is a/c of eating ice - cream after herring last night. Paid visit to nurse and she gave me some Aromaix & 2 tablets. Called S.R. & told her I wouldn't be over as I was feeling bad. Rode home with Miss Miller & she showed me her diary. She certainly does write her thoughts in there. Left my umbrella in car & she took it home with her. Went to bed at 7 P.M. a/c feeling sick. Went to tailors & was told my suit will be finished tomorrow.
Saturday, March 2, 1918

Very nice out today. This is supposed to be my morning off but I decided to come in a/c of taking Tuesday off. Feel somewhat better than yesterday. Called taylor to find out when suit would be finished & he said 3:30. Told J.G.H I wanted to get off at 4 & he said all right. Got my suit & purchased a fancy for my hat. Ethel also got a suit at Schleys, sort of a sport effect. Miss Goldfarb called me up & said she would be over Monday. Went to S.R.'s in evening & she , her cousin Emma & I went to Victoria. Very good show. Olga Petrova in The Light Within.

Sunday, March 3, 1918

Expected a {short hand}. Hannah F. called & requested that I be over S.R.'s in the evening as she had asked some men over. Said I would. Got there about 9 P.M. The boys were pretty nice & as I felt unusually witty & silly had a pretty good time. Bunch was invited over for 3/16.

Monday, March 4, 1918

Had a scrap with dad this morning, {short hand}. Did not have much work this morning. Called Miss Goldfarb & told her to come over alone as I had the afternoon off. Pur. 4 union suits & material for waist. Frances was lost for about 2 1/2 hours this afternoon & we nearly went wild looking for her. She was found at South St. Wharf. Mother nervous from the shock. Phoned office & discovered relief failed to take my place. Told Mrs. Shoemaker about it. Miss Goldfarb had supper at our house & we went to S.R.'s & then saw "The Man Who Came Back" at the Adelphia. Very good. Had cream in Evans & went home.
Tuesday, March 5, 1918

J.G.H. was wanted to know whether yesterday was my afternoon off. He was very cross for not mentioning it to him as he had some special work for me to do. Told him it wasn't my fault. Got quite a bit of dictation (more than usual) & was pretty busy until about 3:15 P.M. Had lunch at Horn & Horn with Minnie. Embroidered & read a while. Walked home. S.R. came over & I made a pink dotted voile waist & she an organctie collar. It just shows that one can do something if they make up their minds.
Wednesday, March 6, 1918

Very nice out today. Pretty busy. Recd. mail from Ed. Some surprise. S.R. called to advise me that she would be over her Aunt's house so I therefore had better come over to see her tomorrow evening. Stopped in Ricklin's for my collar. Finished my waist. It certainly looks fine. Went to Dentist's. Pur. top for bag.

Thursday, March 7, 1918

Have plenty to do today a/c of moving excitement. Promised S.R. to be over today. Purchased silk for bag. Went to S.R.'s intending to make same, but she insisted that we go to movies. Saw fair picture also view of Hog Island, etc.

Friday, March 8, 1918

Excitement a/c of moving. Sewed top on bag this morning. Met Mr. Thos. Downy in Wanamaker's & told him I was going to the Island. Pur. crape de chine chimese. J.G.H. advised me I would receive a $3.00 increase when we go to the Island! O joy! Expected S.R. over this evening but she phoned she was working late, so I went to the Franklin alone & saw a pretty good picture.
Saturday, March 9, 1918

Excitement galore this morning as everybody is packing to move to the Island. Left at 3:30 & met S.R. in Gimbles. She pur. material for a waist in Lit's. It is raining & very nasty underfoot. Promised to stop over this evening. S.R. & I both felt tired - aching feet. She pur. a waist in Scheleys - real pretty. As she was going over her Aunt May's for dinner tomorrow she didn't think she would be able to see me. Mr. Gordinsky of north is up also - therefore the cause.
Sunday, March 10, 1918

Very windy today. Purchased Khaki colored georgette crape & made myself a waist. It practically took me all day, as I had to design same myself & didn't have a pattern. It has a round neck and round small yoke. I hope it turns out all right.

Monday, March 11, 1918

Met bus at Broad St. Station 8:15 A.M. All Engineering girls were together. We certainly did have a lot of fun. We made parodies on various songs & had a fine time. Some sight here. You don't know whether you struck a mining town & expect a shooting or whether it is a circus & to expect a pink tea. We got in at 9:05 A.M. Everything still upset somewhat, therefore not much work. Rode home in bus. Stopped in bank & deposited $10.00. Got home 6:20. S.R. called to remind me of mask dance. We went. Her Aunt May got 2nd prize as "Martha Washington". Sam Vogelson & Max Levy were there. Levy took me home in his machine. Rest of girls (S.K., E.R. & Hannah) rode home by car. {short hand}
Tuesday, March  12, 1918

Came down with only part of Eng. girls in bus. Had more work. Lights went out for part of afternoon. Had lunch in Administration Bldg. Played Victrola & danced. Went home by bus & was let off at Broad & Fitzwater Sts. Got home at 6 P.M. Earlier than usual. Spoke to Miss Miller on phone. She will be over Thursday instead of this evening. I am glad as I am pretty tired. Went to Franklin & saw "Liberty". Pretty good. Got to bed by 10 P.M.

Wednesday, March 13, 1918

Met bus as usual, but it was so crowded that some girls sat on our laps. Adams sent to Broad St. Office. Have a good bit of work today & feel tired. Got home at 6 P.M. this evening. Finished my waist also Anna's blue one. All mine needs now is beading, but I seem to have difficulty in obtaining a pattern as the stores down town don't have them & I can't get in town. Adams went to Broad St. office to dismantle Photostat Mach. & I did his work.

Thursday, March 14, 1918

Have a slight cough today. Handled blue print orders as Adams was busy with Photostat Machine. At 12:15 i got a fearful headache & it nearly drove me wild. Went over to the Hospital & was given some pills. We were held up this evening on Penrose Ferry Bridge as it was open. Raining hard. Stopped in at Biyms (?), Silverman & Snellenburgs for pattern but didn't get same. Spoke to Max Strouse a while & pur. corned beef. Went to bed early. Minnie Gross & Tillie Barmack came over as I was getting in bed & I told them all about Hog Island. Recd. letter from Gertie Bernstein (N.Y.).
Friday, March 15, 1918

My cough worse today & I have a cold. Told J.G.H. about Miss Gross offering to help us out a few days & he didn't think it would be necessary. Talked with J.G.H. re. afternoons off. {short hand} Spoke to Minnie Gross over phone & told her what J.G.H. said. My head is aching badly this afternoon. Got home at 5:55 P.M. & went to bed. Was called for dinner at 7 P.M. Miss Miller came over to get news about Hog Island & S.R. also dropped over. Mr. Fisher, her employer, died last Tuesday. Was very sorry to hear it. Miss Miller & McKonigie might stay in Medical Arts Bldg. Some class.
Saturday, March 16, 1918

Very warm & stuffy in office this morning. J.G.H. advised that raise didn't go through this week but he would try to get it for me. All the girls are sore about it. Went to S.R.'s in evening. Her cousin Lillie was over & we all took a walk. Recd. letter from Minnie Conwell. Mr. Aschman is going to marry Miss Davis. Some surprise. Miss Love & McGovern left

Thursday, March 21, 1918

Made good time in bus this morning getting in at 8:55 A.M. We get 3/4 hr. for lunch now, so I took Miss Pressmar over to see the first keel. Lost part of tail of my scarf & a mechanic came running up with it. S.R. called me on the phone & asked whether I would care to go see Katrinka with Mollie Wolf & herself. Said yes. It started to rain on our way home, so I called S.R. up & told her we wouldn't go. Decided to go tomorrow if it was clear. {short hand} Went to Franklin. Saw Chas. Ray in "The Hived Man" pretty good. Went to bed at 10 P.M.

Friday, March 22, 1918

My but it feels good to be living today. Spring is here & it is a perfect day. J.G.H. called up Transportation Dept. re. busses & it was found that nothing definite had been decided. Min Hart wanted to leave but J.G.H. spoke quite a while to her. I wonder whether she has changed her mind. (I don't doubt it). Riding in bus was fine this evening as curtains were off & I got home at 5:55 P.M. Card from S.R. to the effect that I call her up if I don't care to go to the Theatre. On my way to S.R.'s, Max Stroupe stopped me & spoke quite a while. S.R. & I landed at the Walnut & saw "Fair & Warmer". Pretty good. Stopped at her home & had tea & cake. She received a letter from B. Some surprise.
Saturday, March 23, 1918

Somewhat cooler this morning & I surely did get jarred in the bus. Gloom - General order to the effect that busses will be discontinues as of 3/25. I suppose that means 7:10 each morning. E.S.Clark spoke to me about it & gave me that patriotic talk, etc. & said I was sure to make it each morning. Got my back raises & I of course was delighted. Adams & I got some candy & cake & had a party. Pur. a midget Ingersoll watch - 2.75 to use at the office. Tried to get a hat but  didn't see what I liked. Mother, Father & I went to the Franklin. Saw Wm. S. Hart in " Wolves of the Trail". Miss Chrustian left tonight on a/c of train service.
Sunday, March 24, 1918

Got up at 8 A.M. - something unusual. Pressed curtains & waists. Then washed my hair. Started to clean the 2nd floor. S.R. called me up. She said B would be over later in the evening. James Pressman & Mr. Master dropped in on me quite unexpectedly this afternoon as I was dressed for cleaning & looked a mess. Jack also came up. The boys didn't stay long however. S.R. came over about 7:30 & B didn't show up. Jack said Sam had been home -?- now on trench leave. Had supper home.  {short hand}

Stayed in at noontime but heard that the cafeteria at mess hall #2 is very nice. I think I will try it tomorrow. Had plenty of time for myself today so started some some hair pin lace & embroidered a while. Good news. We can use the busses again this evening & mornings as per usual until further notice. Spoke to Ethel R. on way home from work. Stopped in for a hat, but it wasn't made & she told me to call again tomorrow. Pressed curtains. Went to Dentist's. Ann is not feeling well this evening. Went to the Dentist's. Subscribed for N. American Sunday Paper for one year thereby giving B. Zeeman 6,000 votes in automobile contest.
