1918 Diary

Saturday, June 1, 1918 

Rather foggy this morning & I feel sleepy. Got off at 11:40 & went to Cortiscelli Silk Co. for silk. Got 5 small balls that seamed to match (50¢). Ret. old rose silk pur. at 5 &10¢ store and got crocheting cotton instead. Pur. 4 smocks at 2.00 at Gimbles then met S.R.  in waiting room. Called Millie Wolf on phone & we are to meet her at Snellenberg's Restroom 3 pm. Stopped ? ? Rutbins & made arrangements re: wagon or truck for tomorrow. SK. & Mollie each pur. smocks. S.R. & I did all the shopping & are certainly tired. Jack called re: another fellow- D. Bricksmen. Said we had enough. Recd. letter {short hand}.
 
Sunday, June 2, 1918 


Jack came over early & then had breakfast at my home. Irving & his friend also came over to find out about the extra man I could bring. Told him it was too late. Sam Goodrich was rather late getting down. Bunch  met  at S.R.'s  Sam G. left to try to get Bkickman & B.Z. was late. we all left in Mitch Fowe's truck about 10.00 A.M. en route - Valley Forge. Certainly was some rough road  & we were all sore & could scarcely sit. Took pictures & had a nice quiet time. Coming home was worse than going & we felt very very sore. It started to rain a little as Sam & I got home. Was very tired. H. Cohen called me up while I was away.
Monday, June 3, 1918 

Stopped  at bank & made a deposit. Went to bed rather early. Received letter from Phil White hoping we all had a nice time at picnic Mailed card to Ed at old {short hand}. Went to Dentists. Am somewhat tired today.
 
Tuesday, June 4, 1918 

J.G.H. off this PM. & haven't much to do. {short hand}. S.R. said {short hand} Miss Casey home by boat then stopped at Stoppless to buy some silk, but she had no remnants. Miss Corey pur. some Georgette crepe & satin. Finished my pink sweater.
Wednesday, June 5, 1918 


Miss  Tranel  & I left without Miss Sprogel this morning. Read letter from Wassco. He expects to go over(seas) just as soon as they receive all their equipment. Called S.R. but found she had gone home sick - ? I suppose. Will try to run over tonight. Rain- don't think I will go.  Went to dentists & he is finished now. $10.00. Went to bed 9:30. Were robbed of Irwin's watch & chain & dad's trousers containing 5.00 or more. Had Polish man from next door arrested on suspicion.
Thursday, June 6, 1918 

Miss Tranel & I went via 73st. today, but didn't make as good time as by 49. Spoke to S.R. & she will be with her cousin Lillian tonight. Left by boat & sat all alone all the way home. Recd. mail from Miss Goldfarb. Her sister got job as clerk here & will start in 2 weeks. Went with Ann & mother. Ann got a blue hat. Pur. eats for lunch tomorrow. Went to Franklin & saw nice show. Ans. Phil's letter & started write Wassco, but didn't finish as I was too sleepy & tired.
 
Friday, June 7, 1918

Rain this morning. Left without girls. Engineering girls gave  Miss Ramsay a linen shower & she was very surprised. A number of girls from office & I  went to Y.M.C.A., 52 & samson St.  to swim. Pur. cap & towel in 5 & 10¢ store. Enjoyed swim very much as I recd.  swim instructions from Miss Ferris. Went to Franklin. Saw Wm. Farnum "Rough & Ready". Good.

Saturday, June 8, 1918 

Rather cool this morning. Rumor to the effect that everyone gets off at 12.30 today. General order to the above effect. Joy all over the Drafting Dep. Called S.R. & she said she couldn't get off but for me to be over in evening. Pur. 45"  center piece - 2.00 at Gimbles also 2 hair brushes. Embrodered awhile at S.R.'s. Her cousins Anna & Lillian were over. S.R. said she would call me up tomorrow.
Sunday, June 9, 1918 

Expected a phone call from S.R. all day but didn't receive same. Mrs. Kranhman {short hand} Embroidered a while, {short hand}, & then went to bed.
 
 
Monday, June 10, 1918 

Missed 8:15 & came in at 8:45. J.G.H. wanted to know whether I had the afternoon paper with me. Said I would get a night edition if he wanted it - laugh. Day passed pretty quickly. Embroidered some. Miss Tranel & I went home by boat.
Tuesday, June 11, 1918 

Came up with Miss Sprogel in yellow double car this morning. Missed the shuttle so we walked in. Ripped my knitting bag apart & made smaller one out of it with a round cardboard bottom. {short hand} Irwin {short hand} Ann {short hand} S.R. {short hand} G.J., G. Schwartz, R. Livingston, G. Wednesday, June  12, 1918 

Raining this morning Feel sort of dizzy & sick Went up to see Dr. Young, but she was out. I believed I contacted a cold during the night. Funny day all right. First it rained, then it cleared up then it rained, thundered & lightening  - clear again. J.G.H. wanted to know what I was embroidering & reason why. Thought I was going to be married. Said not during war times. Went home by boat. Recd. letter from Wassco bidding me farewell as he was leaving for France. It certainly is too bad, as he was only at Camp about 2 months. Uncle Itsick of New York came in today re: work.

Thursday, June 13, 1918 

Somewhat cool this morning. Had lunch in Miss Carey's office & we all took a walk as far as the dike & back again. C.C. Adams is out today & I am doing his work. Wrote Gertie Bernstein in ans. to hers of some time ago. Am embroidering a lot today. Miss Sprogel & I took 4:55 train home & I walked from 24 & Chestnut. Enjoyed same very much. Uncle secured work at Hog Island - cement work. S.K. came over & we took a walk. We got weighed - She - 125 1/2; I - 120 1/2.

Damp & cool today. Phoned S.R. and promised to go to Keith with her & Lillian. {short hand} 
 
 
 
 
 

 

Saturday, June 15, 1918

Miss Casey & I left early to see Miss Ramsay get married, but got there just as the last of the party was leaving. We were very much disappointed. Met S.R. at Snellenburgs also Ida Stamps & Anna Rosen. Had my oxfords mended & pur. a combing jacket. S.R. & I went {short hand} Met Ann & Fannie. {short hand} Jack came later. {short hand}
Sunday, June 16, 1918

Got up at 12 & tried to purchase a pair of white oxfords but didn't succeed. Jack came in about 2 P.M. We left about 3:45 for Willow Grove. {short hand} Got to bed pretty late. Ann told me that Harry J. Cohen {short hand}

 
 

Monday, June  17, 1918

Met Miss Tramel in #11 this morning. Miss Ferris was in to know whether I wanted to go swimming & I said yes. Called S.R. to find out whether she wanted to go & I got the shock of my life. She claims she has to go west to Omaha with her aunt. My but I was stunned simple. Will see her tonight to talk thing over. Met Sadie Strouse in cafeteria. Gee, this seems like a day of surprises for me. Miss Karloff & I overheard a conversation re: clairvoyant & got her address -  Robbs, 30 & Girard. Irwin & I decided to go. She wasn't  good at all & didn't tell me anything. Met Sam Goodrich as I was {short hand}

Tuesday, June 18, 1918

Cloudy today so I took the train. Somehow I didn't feel much like embroidering today; so I read awhile. Had dinner in Restaurant on 52nd St. then went swimming at Y.M.C.A. 52 & Sansom from 7:30 to 8:30 P.M. Dancing & refreshments later. Selma & Minnie Mellon & Ray Cutler came to watch us. Had a very nice time. Pur. pair of white linen oxfords at 52 & Chestnut -5.90. Got home 11 & found mother sick - tomain or acute indigestion I should say.

Didn't report at office on a/c of mother being ill. Phoned J.G.H. {short hand}  Read awhile & went to bed - 9.30.
 
 
 
 

 

Thursday, June 20,1918

Rather cool today. Had plenty to do this A.M. Had lunch in Miss Carey's office & took a walk to Ind. Rel. Bldg. & back. Watched "home defense" drill. S.R. called & wanted me to go to Red Cross at Young Women's Union this evening. Said "Yes", She came over & we went. Met Emma Ricklin & Yetta Simmons there. Made sponges. They certainly are particular & I {short hand}  S.R. told me Sam Hirschorn was coming over tomorrow. Jack called her up so she told him to bring me over also.
Friday, June 21, 1918 


Rain today & very cool. Jack called me up & said he wouldn't be over tonight as he worked late & on a/c of the rain, Asked me to buy  tickets for Keith's  for tomorrow evening. Said I would. Read a very exciting story in "Short Story" mag. & went to bed rather late.

Saturday, June 22, 1918

Rain again today. Called Keith's & they said they don't reserve tickets for Saturday. Had my hair washed at Mrs. Love 58 & Spruce Sts. but I don't like her as much as Mulholland's. Pur. 2 vests & a 54" scarf to match my center piece. {short hand} 
 
 
Sunday, June 23, 1918

Was to be over at S.R.'s this 3 P.M. but as I couldn't do so phoned her & she said to be over at 5 P.M. {short hand} Aunt & Uncle Haim {short hand} Aunt Kate, Uncle, Fannie & Mazer came over. I didn't see the latter 2. Went to S.R.'s {short hand} 
 
 
 
 
Monday, June 24, 1918

Made 8:15 this morning. Had lunch at Miss Cary's office. Embroidered a while. Copied War Cake & Devil Cake recipes from Miss Traub. Made extra copy for J.G.H., C.C.A. & E.S.C. Discussed food question in office. Went home on 4:55 & walked down. Made a deposit of $18.21. S.R. came over. We embroidered a while & then went to Model. Saw Norma Talmage in "By Right of Purchase." Very good indeed. We decided to go swimming if it could be arranged. 
Tuesday, June 25, 1918

Missed 7:28 Chester car so I took the train. Miss Ferris said I had to be a member to join YMCA. She also advised me of the exercises that are held on Thursday 12:20. 12:30 reducing exercises. Phoned S.R. & told May to tell her we wouldn't go swimming but that I would be over tomorrow. evening. Took a bath & went to bed after crocheting a while on edge of combing jacket. Anna made French knots on same. {short hand}

Wednesday, June  26, 1918

Made 8:15 shuttle train. Had lunch in Miss Cary's office & she then asked {short hand} Left on 4:55 & walked home. Recd. card to the effect that Wassco arrived safely "overseas". It only took him 15 days to land across. Went to S.K.'s & wanted her to go uptown with me, but she was too tired. Baked a devil cake & it turned out fine. 
 

 

Thursday, June 27, 1918


Was pretty busy this morning. Had {short hand}. Took a speed test - 75 first & 85 next time. Went home by boat. Went to Red Cross meeting. Made sponges {short hand}

Friday, June 28, 1918

Am sore & feel OK. S.R. called to say she wouldn't be over as she wanted to see the South St. Businessmen's parade, so I went alone to Franklin. Saw a pretty good show. Promised to get tickets for Keith's for Saturday afternoon.
Saturday, June 29, 1918 


 Left on 12:25 & walked down with girls. Got weighed 122 with hat & coat. Pur. tickets, waist for Ann & cream. Met S.K. at 4:15 & went to Keith's. Pretty good show. Went to tailors with her, but he wasn't home so we {short hand} Franklin & saw a fair picture, but I was very sleepy & tired. Promised to be over at 4 P.M. & go to Mollie's home with her. 
Sunday, June 30, 1918


S.K. called to inquire whether she left her purse at our home. Said no - I hope she finds it as she had $7.00 in it. Went over to see her about 5 P.M. (She left her purse at the tailor's.) We crocheted our initials & embroidered. Had some cream. 2 girls came over & we took a walk.
