1918 Diary

Monday, July 1, 1918 

Mother got sick about 2 A.M. I didn't get a wink of sleep. Went for the doctor at 4 A.M. Think she has kidney trouble. Went in for morning & left on 11:10 shuttle. Found her somewhat better. S.R. came in evening. Called Sam Goodrich re:  picnic on Sunday & promised to call tomorrow at 7:30 P.M.. Irvin Goldburg & a few others of Venus Club were over & we discussed  picnic, Had some fun. Pur. corset & ribbed brasserie, but when I tried same on found the former too large & latter unsatisfactory. Adams out today, to be gone until Friday vacation.
Tuesday, July 2, 1918 

Did not see mother before I left as she was asleep. Phoned S.R. that I thought I would be able to go to Emma's & she said to go to Mollie's instead. Met Herschenhorns, Jules, etc. & a few sailor Boys. One of them took us home. They all wanted S.R. & myself  to go to a picnic with them on Thursday, but we wouldn't promise. S. Goodrich failed to call up. (Intended to leave on 4.55 train but my watch was slow). I missed it so I left on shuttle.
 
 
Wednesday, July 3, 1918 

 Didn't have much to do today, & I felt rather sick. Left on boat with Miss Traub. Jack came over enroute to New York, He hurt his back in Shipyard. Told him about picnic for Sunday & he insisted on coming along. We went to call  Sam Goodrich & as we got there he called me. S.R. came over & we called Lillian Rosen. Everything O.K. She will go with Jack & I  with Sam & SR with Hirshenhorn. Stayed over night at S.R.'s & pur. fruit etc. for picnic. S.R. {short hand}
Thursday, July 4, 1918 


SR. & I got up at 7 A.M. & went out to Jennie's home (her cousin). They were surprised to see us as S.R. told her we wouldn't be out . Mr. & Mrs. Levy, Shapiro, Miss Levi & Aunt May were at the picnic. We went to Strawberry Mansion & I had a very nice time. Was very tired when I got home.
 

 

Friday, July 5, 1918 


Came up by train & I certainly do feel tired. ? J.G.H. left at 11:10 A.M. but returned at 2.30 P.M. (Wife left for West) called S.R. & told her I ordered a 4lb. cake, also for her to meet me at 6:30 Reading Terminal. We had dinner at Childs & proceeded to Emma & Dot. Ricklin's. Met her friend & I found him to be very nice. Also met 2 young men who are boarding there & working at Hog Island. Left about 9:45. Found a nickel at 3 & Bainbridge St. Recd card from C.C. Adams, also one from Sam Auerback from England. Was glad, indeed, to receive.
Saturday, July 6, 1918 


Didn't get up until 7:15 this morning. Missed train & 8.15 shuttle. However, I made the 8:25. {short hand} Pur. wire frame for an organdy hat. Irwin, Goldburg & I did some buying for the picnic & S.R. & Lillian helped pack. Certainly was tired. Bought more embroidery cotton.
 
 
 
 

 

Sunday, July 7, 1918

Got up about 7:15 & started getting everything packed. Sam G. came over at 7:45 & was disappointed at being told the boat left at 9 A.M.. Lillian came also, followed shortly by S.R. & Sam Hirshenhorn. Boys left the bread at home so we carried it to the wharf. Irwin's girl disappointed him. Had a pretty nice time. {short hand} S. Goodrich got a job at Hog Island. starts tomorrow. Wonder how  {short hand}
Monday, July 8, 1918 

Feel somewhat tired after yesterday. Cut my finger on top of jar cover & got it bandaged at Dr. Young's. Started a rose camisole yoke. Wrote {short hand} letter. Sewed lace that Ann made on the cover for buffet but I stretched it & will have to rip it off. Went to bed at 9:20. Met Ester Cohen in car & she said about half of boys from Camp Mead had left for Hoboken.
 
Tuesday, July 9, 1918 

Made shuttle train this morning. Somewhat cooler. Embroidered & crocheted awhile. Made 2 sample dolls hats - one a sailor & one a Scotch tam. They looked cute so I gave them to Mr. Clark for his little girl. Made some lemonade this P.M. J.G.H. & E.S.C. didn't care for any so I only made some for C.C.A & myself. Went up on boat with Miss Tranel & Miss Melon. Very cool. Recd. photo of ships on which Wasco sailed. It is the largest in the world. The USS. Leviathan. Went to bed 9 P.M.
Wednesday, July 10, 1918 

Went up by train with Miss Archibald. Brought my frame & Mrs. Lawn gave me the organdies. J.G.H. wanted to know whether I was going to make a hat after the fashion of my sample of yesterday. Started hat.  Miss Tranel out sick - hat looks out of shape. Feel tired. Called S.R. but she was at Lillian's. Went to Franklin. Saw a pretty good picture. Fasher called re: Abe. He has been away from work all {short hand}.
 
Thursday, July 11, 1918 

Continued on organdy hat. Miss Tranel ripped part & said  she would straighten it for me. Called S.R. & she will meet me at Red Cross  meeting. Left my Panama hat at cleaners & had my shoes shined. Went to Red Cross. Made sponges & compresses. Girls were very talkative & didn't do much work. S.R. & I had some cream & made an appointment to meet her at her home tomorrow. As Selma Melon & I were getting off boat en route home a few sailors waved & when we got off,  they were there to meet us; but we let on we didn't see them. 
Friday, July  12, 1918 

Looked like rain this morning but it cleared up. Took shuttle & barely made it. Hat turned out better than I expected it. Men in office kidded me about it. Finished hat in boat. Rain. Jack came over & we took a walk to De Lorenzo's & stopped over at S.R.'s. She was over her Aunt May's home. Met Hannah & Lillian there. Jack & I went to Franklin & saw "Divorce Fair." Had an argument with Ann, Jack & mother re: religion & foods.
 
 
 
Saturday, July 13, 1918 

{short hand} Was pretty busy this morning. Called S.R. but she said she is going to help Lillian this pm., so I went right home. Got undressed & got into a smock & dark skirt. Got my Panama, but it doesn't look very clean. Stopped at S.R.'s but she wasn't home yet so I stayed with Ethel for a while. Jack came over in evening also S.R. & Lillian. Had some cream & we left early. Had a headache Jack {short hand} Gave J.G.H. a bread that my mother made.
Sunday, July 14, 1918 

Rather cloudy out. Washed my clothes & certainly do feel tired. Called S.R. & told her I had a headache & wouldn't be over. Mended my clothes & went to bed.

Monday, July 15, 1918

 Tried new line to Hog Island today via 40 & Mkt. Missed shuttle & came up in machine. Had lunch at Cafeteria tho -nothing to eat. J.G.H. liked the bread mother baked. Hooray - first southwestern trolley running into the Island today. Very warm out. Tried new line. Held up on bridge for 25 min. Got home 6.15. Recd. mail {short hand} Liverpool, Engl. {short hand} Ans. immediately also sent newspaper along. S.R. & I went to dressmaker & Franklin Saw "Over The Top"- Good.
Tuesday, July 16, 1918

Didn't get up until 7.10 so I made the train. Told J.G.H. I would like to get off  this P.M. to do some shopping & {short hand} 3:30 {short hand} 3.15 {short hand} brush, atomizer, tickets for Keith's & hair nets. Started to make Anna a purple silk dress. Pressed some things & went to bed.




 
Wednesday, July  17, 1918

Walked to Jackson St. & took S.W. trolley - 8¢ & made good tine. Asked J.G.H. about vacation & {short hand} Rain today. Miss Ferris {short hand} dramatic club {short hand} Miss Carey would like to go but her beau takes up Wed. evening & makes it {short hand} shake him ({short hand} Left at 4:03 got home 5:50 on S. Western. Recd. card from Jules Sigmond at Mt. Gretna. Went to YMCA-meeting of Hog Island Dramatic Club. Type of play, talents,  etc. were discussed . On way home some fellow tried to start a conversion in car, but it didn't work. Stopped S.R.s & discussed vacation problem. 
Thursday, July 18, 1918


Rode to Jackson St. & made 7:50. Met Beatrice Mollenick & Adel Miller in car. Made fine time - 33 minutes. Miss Leonard brought some copy work from book for me to do tabulating figures. Some job. Did 3 single space pages for her. Miss Porter later asked me whether I had received the work. Mrs. Carey pur. cotton for me. H.J.R. {short hand} Had a discussion {short hand} Miss Tranel & I left at 5 of 5. I walked home from Jackson St. Went to S.R.'s & to dressmaker with her. Then to Red Cross. We certainly didn't feel like going, but, in the end, exercised some control & went.

Friday, July 19, 1918


Walked to Jackson St. & made 7:45 car. Good time. Miss Traub wants me to make an appointment for having our hair washed at Mullholland's. I will call her up some time today r: tomorrow afternoon. Wrote E.L.. a funny letter today. Miss Lawn Casey & I discussed fortune telling & had a lot of work this P.M. Rained when we went home (boat). SR & I went to Keith's. Sophie Tucker's violinist was sick & she lost her voice - show cut in half. General disappointment. One of the youngsters in another act lost her bloomers - laughter. Nat Hirshenhorn called to Camp this morning.
Saturday, July 20,1918

J.G.H. discussed various changes in Drafting Div. C.C.A., Irwin & Goldburgh might be put in Drafting room & I to take C.C.A.'s job. {short hand} Had to wait 25 minutes for a S.W. trolley & it got off the track at 20th St. Got into a car that came along. Went to Camden. Sam (Auerbach) is now in France & Aunt (Katie Auerbach) cried when she spoke of him. Went to Ruby alone & saw "The Fair Pretender". Pretty good.
 
 

 

Sunday, July 21, 1918 


Mended petticoats, nightie & fixed my green voile dress. Had Bessie (her sister Betty's original name was Bessie) phone S.R. & she said she was going out to Mollie Wolf's & for me to meet her there. I guess not - she might know I wouldn't go out alone. Phoned Anna Goldfarb & said I would come out to see her. We had dinner & went out to the park. Met a Miss Goldstein there. Had cream. Met Bennie Paul, Sam Goodrich & lots of others. Was very tired when I got home. (S.R. said Mrs. Harris was in town yesterday. {short hand} Atl. City.
Monday, July 22, 1918

American Army breaks German line. 4 barges sunk by U boat off coast of Cape Cod & our men take 17,000 prisoners, 560 guns. Great victory. J.G.H. has a new job with outfitting dept. {short hand} 6 P.M. Went home by boat & it certainly was warm. Recd. card from Mrs. Harris. She is in Atlantic City now & wants us to come out soon. Worked on Ann's dress for a while. Took bath & went to bed 11:30 P.M.
 
 
Tuesday, July 23, 1918

Still warm & I certainly feel weak. Miss Leonard called to inquire whether I could help her & I said I might this P.M. {short hand} Miss Reeling brought some work in later. J.G.H. {short hand} Went home by boat. S.R. & I went to YMCA & became members. Had lots of fun. Recd. letter from Venus Club thanking us for helping them at the picnic.
Wednesday, July 24, 1918

{short hand} Was pretty busy all day & Miss Leonard wanted me to help her, but I said it wasn't possible. Miss Reeling later came in also but I refused. Recd. card from Nat who is at Camp Wadsworth. Ann made me a peacock tray cover (crocheted). Very pretty. Sewed on her dress, washed my hair & went to bed.

Thursday, July 25, 1918

Penrose Ferry bridge closed & we had to come across by launch to the other side then use trolley. Got in at 9:15. Some trip. Certainly was upset. About 10:30 Mr. Fuller ordered us to move into Mr. King's office so that Miss Carey could go with Reeve & Miss Sprogel do both King, Haynes & Stovon's work. That upset me more. {short hand} Miss Lawn, Selma Melon & I had dinner at the hotel. Pretty good. We met Ray Cutler, Minnie & others on the boat. Sang, danced & carried on high. Had loads of fun & enjoyed ourselves immensely. Wrote L. Wasco.

Friday, July 26, 1918

Bridge closed a/c repairs again. Company had a barge to meet us & on same was a 2 story platform. Wen we landed it knocked against side of bridge & nearly came down. I fell as I got in the car, but didn't get hurt. Got in at 9:05 A.M. Had plenty of work today, also made out envelopes for invitations to launching. {short hand} Abe got his face burnt while working & mother is making him resign. Will speak to {short hand} about him. Went to ? & saw Nazimova in "Revelation". Very good. Spoke to S.R. on phone & she said Sam H. wanted to take her out tonight. Wrote Ed.
Saturday, July 27, 1918

Came up by Chester Short line & missed shuttle. Got in by machine. E.S.C. said to bring Abe in on Monday. Went with Irwin to get him a suit, but he couldn't get one to fit him. Stopped at Ricklin's & spoke to Ethel. Had lunch & lounged around until about 6 P.M.. Had my shoes shined & took a walk with Eleanor. Met S.R. at 5th St. & went back with her. Had some cream & stayed for supper. We  then went to our house. Jack called up & said he would be over later. He came over with Sam Goodrich about 9 P.M. We had some cream, he pur. music, danced & played at S.R.'s. Worked on Ann's dress until quite late.
Sunday, July 28, 1918

Ann off to Atl. City this morning. I have a bone to pick with her as she took along my middie pink & tan georgette waists. Oh boy, wait until I get her. It certainly is hot today. About 4.15 I went to S.R.'s. Met Lillian Rosen at 6th St. S.R. & I had some cream & took a walk. Was very tired. Sat around until about 10 P.M. then purchased delicatessen for tomorrow's luncheon. On way back met Hannah, Lillian & Ethel. Walked back with Hannah, spoke to Gussie, & congratulated Sam on his marriage. Couldn't sleep. Read a magazine until 3 A.M. & finally dozed off. Got weighted--119 lbs.
 
Monday, July 29, 1918 


Bridge ok today & Abe was in to see Clark, but he wouldn't do anything until he saw his foreman. Had lots of work. Miss Leonard brought in some work, but I didn't get a chance to do it. Car off track at bridge. Got into a machine. It went wrong also. Got home by car at about 4.30. Recd. mail from Ann. She is at the New Liberty Hotel. Went to S.R.s with champaign georgette dress but she said the cleaners closes at 7 P.M. Went & had cream with Gussie & Hannah Furman & S.R. Went to Hannah's & pur. powder etc. Man ? & sold us white skirts. I pur. 2 cheap. Wrote Gertie Bernstein. 
Tuesday, July 30, 1918


I must have slept on my right arm during the night as it was lifeless this morning & I certainly was scared. {short hand} Rain this P.M. {short hand} Wrote Anna that I might be down Atl. City on Sat. afternoon. Called S.R. re: swimming. She pur. annets for me. If it doesn't rain we will go. It is raining real hard & I didn't get home until 7:15. Fixed hems of skirts I pur. last night & started to fix dress into a bathing suit. {short hand} Asked Mr. Clark for Monday Aug. 5 morning off. Heard we might have a holiday a/c launching. Hope so as I might go to Atl. City for a few days.
Wednesday, July 31, 1918


Rather cool this morning & I came without a coat. It is raining again & lasted all day long. Spoke to Sadie Strouse & she said she moved to 309 Tibian St. Asked her whether she knew Eva Rosenfeld & she said no. Met Eva in 3rd St. car en route home. She looks bad. Her mother is in a sanitarium now for 9 months. Too bad. Recd. card from Gertie Bernstein as to why i didn't write. Recd. $4.80 interest on corporation shares for 6 months. Father purchased 20 more shares for me. went to Franklin & saw "False Ambitions". Pretty good.
