1918 Diary

Tuesday, Jan. 1, 1918 

Mummers' Parade C.C. Adams & I viewed same from reserved seats on 2nd floor of Gomery-Schwartz (Motor Car Co.) Bldg. Not as good as usual. {shorthand} Ethel showed me box of candy H. J. Cohen sent her. It is very pretty. (Note: Harry J. Cohen proposed to my mother later in 1918.)
 
 
 
 

 

Wednesday, Jan. 2, 1918 

Sowing again this morning. {shorthand} Stayed in for lunch & took a nap. Lecture in Scottish Rite Hall by L. D. Lovekin, Consulting Engineer on "Propelling Machinery of the Ships". Tried to take same (short hand notes), but he was going about 300 words per minute & none of us (other stenographers) were able to get all of it. Recd. Mail from Ed. He has not as yet gone to France (as a soldier in World War I) but expects to any day. Baked a layer cake for him & answered his letter. Wrote Gertie Bernstein telling her S. R. (Sara Ricklin) & I will be over tonight (mail used to be delivered twice a day and you could mail a letter in the morning for afternoon delivery). Wasco called.
Thursday, Jan. 3, 1918 

Mailed Ed's cake at noon (special delivery) so be sure he recd. It. S. R. called to advise me that she can't go to Pell's with me tonight as the folks will be away & she has to stay home. Heard that Millie Lipschutz married Jack Bennett. Some surprise. Am disappointed at her not letting me know. Have a headache this afternoon. Walked home with Miss Miller. Recd. Card from Joe Goodrich. He has been made a corporal & is getting stout. Went to Pell's & found Gertie stopped over a neighbor's house. Bid her goodbye as she is going back to New York on Saturday & promised to write her soon. Harry's cousin Issie came in later & we all had a discussion about the war etc. Spoke to G. J. (Gertie Jaspan) over the phone re coat.
Friday, Jan. 4, 1918 

Very cold again this morning. Lecture in Rest Room by a Miss Silverman on Turning Public Schools into Social & Recreation Centers after School Hours. Very good. Paid Dr. Young a visit on act. of having eye strain. Said that card works was very injurious to the eyes. Lecture in Scottish Rite Hall by Drs. Darlinston & Riley. Ladies only. Subject Why we get tired, colds, etc. Pretty good. Intended to stay home & wash my hair but Sara Ricklin came over & we walked to the Ruby (movie theater). Saw Irene Castle in a good picture. ( Movies were silent in 1918.) Didn't wash my hair.
Saturday, Jan. 5, 1918 

Got peeved at Adams for accusing me of misplacing last month's photostat report. I put it in his "in" basket last night but he would not believe me. Poor Chump. Went to cashiers to get paid & was advised that I had been transferred to Drafting Div. Payroll. JGH (her supervisor) or C.C.A. were not advised to this effect. Purchased polish for gray shoes. Spoke to Sam Goodrich at Dallstmer's. Stayed home tonight & went to bed at 8:45 P.M. {short hand} Becker called & said he would be over tomorrow.
 

 

Sunday, Jan. 6, 1918 

Much warmer today. Washed. 1:30 P.M. Becker called ready to take pictures. None of us are ready. Got dressed & took about 2 dozen pictures. S. Ricklin called me up. B.Z. was coming over with another friend & she wanted me to bring E. if he came. {short hand} Raining & hailing tonight & the streets are becoming very slippery. Went to bed at 11:15 P.M.
 
 

 

Monday, Jan. 7, 1918 

Very nasty outside, in fact so slippery that you can scarcely walk & got to work at about 8:50 A.M. Stayed in at noontime. Called S.R.  B. was over with Irving Rubinstein. Ethel was at a dance & Wasco took her home. Glad & sorry I did not go over & she will be unable to go with me tonight to have her hair washed as she has to work late but will bring her cousin over tomorrow evening. JGH & Mosley said that I would not get any more afternoons off - account of being transferred to Drafting Div. Payroll. Asked JGH if this was correct & he said as long as I had a relief he had nothing to say. Rode home. {shorthand} 
Tuesday, Jan. 8, 1918 

Gymnasium Frolic tonight at Y.M.C.A. but will not attend as Wasco is coming over this evening also Sara R. &  her cousin. Waited quite a while on 5th St. for a (trolley) car but none came along. Met G.J. (Gertie Jaspan) & her sister. I took the South St. car & exchanged up 13th. Had to wait there a long while & did not get to work until about 8:55. Found Mrs. Hahn at my desk. She claimed it was my morning off. Spoke to Mrs. Shoemaker about it & she promised to give me another ½ day off this week. Am certainly disgusted this morning. Had lunch at Dennets. Mrs. Shoemaker phoned & advised me that Mrs. O'Neil will relieve me on Friday morning. Recd. Mail from Ed. The cake reached him OK - not a crack in the icing. No date for departure to some foreign port has been set as of Feb. 1st. Gee, I feel sorry for him as I don't think that he wants to go. Wasco came over & brought material for a collar with him. Stayed a long while & made an appointment for Saturday. ? did not come over until 9:10 & I had just gotten ready to go out. Men of A.I.S.C. had a lecture same as the one for the ladies the other day. S. R. & her cousin were not over.
Wednesday, Jan. 9, 1918 

Fire at 5th & Pine Sts. Held up  car (probably the Hog Islan Car  - Suburban #26) on 5th St. for about a half hour. We were late again as usual. Had lunch in the Rest Room. Mrs. Binz delivered a talk on walking at noon tome. She wants to arrange "Walking Clubs" starting Saturday. First one will be "Academy of Fine Arts". Told her I would attend this one. Lecture in Scottish Rite Hall by Mrs. Thomas on "Machinery in the Ships". Couldn't hear same as I was too far back. Met Fannie Botkiss on my way over to S. R.'s (Sara Ricklin). She told me that Sophie's mother paid her a visit for a little while. S. R. & I saw "Show of Wonders". Pretty good. Met (Jacob's) Uncle Jack, Aunt Mary & Sara at Jacob's. Had (ice) cream with them.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 

Thursday, Jan. 10, 1918

Met Aaron Levine in  car this morning. We both got on the elevated at 5th St & missed the car. Got to work at 8:45 AM. Miss O'Neil substitute for tomorrow introduced herself to me. She is some painted up blond doll & I don't think JGH will care much for her. Wrote a letter to Phil. White at Camp Mead. We have a nurse in the Rest Room. Gosh! She sure is a "peach". Had hot chocolate & cake about 3:15 P.M. Walked home with Miss Miller. Went to dentist's & then to Franklin. Pretty good picture. Becker sent a picture of myself (one that he had copied from the one I took in Atl. City.) Also some long sentimental note etc., etc. {shorthand} 
Friday, Jan. 11, 1918 

Had morning off. Stayed in bed until 11:30. Recd. Mail from Minnie Conwell enclosing 4 tickets for Petroleum Athletic Dance. Will try to dispose of same for her. Met hannah Johnson in Rest Room. She certainly has gotten fat. She is working at that telephone switchboard. Called S. R. on phone. She promised to be over this evening & made arrangements for Sam H. & herself to join Wasco & myself tomorrow evening. SR did not come over on acct. of the snow. Went to bed early, but could not fall asleep.
 
 

 

Saturday, Jan. 12, 1918 

Long dreary day. Went with Mrs. Binz and other girls to Academy of Fine Arts to view exibit of paintings. Had explain various works to us. Very interesting. Pay day. Haven't very much to do this afternoon. Had my photograph taken in Photostat Room. Not very good. Mr. Adams thinks it is good. Recd. Card from Harry Goodman (Camp Meade). Wassco came over & we wnet to Sara Ricklins. Sam Hershanhorn came over and we all went to the Stanley, Couldn't get in as it was crowded. Went to Arcade & saw a good picture. Stopped in Ackers to get something to eat. Got a sticking pain in my side but it is alright now. {short hand} 
Sunday, Jan. 13, 1918 

Stayed home all day. {shorthand} Knitted a tam for Bessie (her sister Betty). Pain in my chest is bothering me somewhat today.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 

Monday, Jan. 14, 1918 

Am sure this morning & feel miserable. Quite some congestion at the freight elevators this morning. Ann (her sister) came up to see us in reference to a position but could not do anything for her. Met Diana Rabinowitz, Miss Miller's friend, in Rest Room. Very bad pains necessitated a visit to the nurse. She gave me some ginger & I thought it would burn me up inside, Wanted to rest a while, but JGH gave me some special work. Walked home with Miss Miller. She wanted me to stop in Banks with her but decided to go to Bank alone. Met Florence Kaplan there. She got a little thinner. Her sister Freda was married in November. She has been corresponding with Sidney Edwards. Some surprise. Mail from Becker. Poor fish. Went to Franklin. Saw a good picture.
 
Tuesday, Jan. 15, 1918 

Feeling a little better this morning. Streets are very slippy. Came to work on Elevated & made pretty good time. Met Miss Confoot in Rest Room & she asked me how I liked being with JGH. She said he spoke very well of me. Some consolation. Not very busy this morning. Wrote Minnie Corwell returning tickets for dance. Wrote Hattie. Had lunch at Childs' with Miss Gross. Sent a Hog Island News to Ed. Paid a visit to Dr. Young in reference to pain in my side. She thought it was a cold & gave me some tablets which I don't think I will take. JGH feeling kind of cranky this P.M. Walked home alone. No mail from Ed. Camp is quarantined on a/c of measles. Stopped in for my scarf but it was not finished. Met Miss Toplinger there. Went to Dentist's & then to S.R.'s Stayed there awhile. Stopped in to Wrams to get some (ice) cream. It was very icy and not good at all.
Wednesday, Jan. 16, 1918 

Lecture this afternoon, but I will not attend as it is my afternoon off. Worked steadily until 12:45 then left. Met Ester Bernhart on Mkt. St and Al ?. Walked as far as 5 & Pine Sts. with him. {shorthand} Got some sugar for mother at the market. Same bunch there. Got my scarf & then went to S. R.'s. Purchased ½ doz. Stocking for myself & 1 doz. Of childrens. Went over to Camden. Aunt & Uncle (Frank and Katie Auerbach) were not feeling very well. Sam & I went to Fannie's (Fannie Mazor). The baby (Marvin Mazor) was sick but is now feeling much better now. We took Fannie back to Aunt's. Called up Wasco & broke engagement for Friday. He wanted to make one for Saturday or Sunday, but I said no. Went to bed about 10 P.M. 
Thursday, Jan. 17, 1918 

Got in a little earlier today and worked pretty hard. Had lunch at Dennetts with Miss Gross. Purchased 1 Doz. Hair nets at Wanamaker's. S. R. called me up in reference to same & I promised to bring them over tonight on the way to the Theater. Loaned Adam 7¢ on account of him spending all of his money on junk for his automobile. JGH felt very cranky this morning. S. R. & I saw "The Passing Show of 1917". Was rather disappointed as I had heard so much about it. I expected to see more than I did. Wrote Gertie Bernstein & Ed.
 
 

 

Friday, Jan. 18, 1918 Mom's (birthday)

Mother told me G. J. & her sister had been over last night, G. J. called me up this morning in reference to the coal situation. Have a slight cold this morning. Recd. Mail from Phil White and a card from Ed. I thought he had the measles, but am glad he hasn't. G. J. came over & we went to synagogue. Pretty good services. Went over to S. R.'s but she wasn't home. It is snowing pretty hard. Rode home. Met Aaron Levin, Bessie Segal, Susie Plutt & Gussie Jaspan in car.
 
 

 

Saturday, Jan. 19, 1918

Met G. J. & sister in car. Adams wanted JGH to sign pay slips for some of the girls & JGH asked me whether it is a wise thing to do. As I wanted mine, I naturally said yes & when he saw my slip he roared & said it was the first time anyone pilled the wool over his eyes in such a manner. Went to Gimbles & tried to purchase a hat but couldn't see anything that I likes that was reasonable. G.J. promised to walk over to our house with Harry Goodman if he came up from Camp Meade. I waited until 9 o'clock & then went over to see her. Harry came about 9:20. He got thinner, but seemed to like it much better than he thought he would. Had us roaring about the description of Camp Life. Gave Mom her slip. 
Sunday, Jan. 20, 1918

Got up about 11:30. Washed. G. J. called me up & said Harry Goodman's cousin was coming over & that probably we wouldn't go to the Mt. Sinai Dance at Apolo Hall. Was very much disappointed. We took a walk as far as 3 & Mkt. Sts. Had some Ice Cream & rode home. Pur. Nightgown & drawers at Katies & went to bed.
 

 

Monday, Jan. 21, 1918

Cars are few & far between today on a/c of the majority of places being closed for 5 days - per instructions - Dr. Garfield - Fuel Director. JGH got in about 9:40. Couldn't make connections. Mailed a funny card to Ed & Harry Goodman. {shorthand} Had lunch with Miss Gross. Walked home with Miss Miller. Met Ethel Ricklin & she said S. R. had the day off & was with Ida Stamps. Recd. A letter from Ed. He is a Sergeant now. Mrs. Blank was over to see us. Went to Franklin. Saw Tom Sawyer & Primitive Call, both good. Went to bed at 11 P.M. 
Tuesday, Jan. 22, 1918

It certainly is snowing hard this morning & I came to work on the elevated. Got in about 8:45. Ans. E's letter last night & mailed this morning. Have just made up my mind no to purchase any candy for a whole month. Of course, if it is offered me, I can accept same. Wonder how long I will keep it up. Will try hard at any vane. Had lunch with Miss Gross at Wanamaker's. Pur. Leather belt & brassiere. Brassiere does not fit right so I will return it.. Miss Gross called home & her mother is sick. Walked home with Miss Miller. Wassco called me on the phone. Met G. J. & her sister on my way to ans. Same. He made an appointment for Saturday & I incidently mentioned about the A. I. S. C. Dance next Saturday. He told me that Harry & Herman Had a quarrel & were on the outs. G. J. wanted to know if I would go to the shvitz (steam bath) with them. She called S. R. & ? All went to 7 & Snyder. Met Miss Miller there. We had lots of fun & a nice time. Got home 12:45 A.M.
Wednesday, Jan. 23,1918

Didn't have to wait long for a car this morning. Something unusual. Got to work late however. Told Adams that a very pretty girl was going to relieve me tomorrow, but in reality she is very homely. Lecture by Mr. Gillette on "Fabrication of Steel for the Ships". He was reading same from a prepared copy. Met Miss Barcume there. She likes Camden (Ship Yard) very much & I am inclined to ask to be transferred there instead of the (Hog) Island. Fixed my blue dree & polished my grey shoes. Went to bed about 10:30 P.M.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 

Thursday, Jan. 24, 1918

Morning off. {shorthand} Walked to work. Pur. Veils, writing paper, hankies & red beads this morning. Left my dress to be cleaned & pressed. Spoke to Mrs. Shoemaker re. Possible transfer to another Dept. in case I refuse to go to Hog Island. She would look into the matter & advise me of any opening. Am almost sorry I mentioned it to her as JGH might get sore for not talking it up first with him. Went home with Miss Miller. S. R. called & wanted to know whether I would be over & see her this evening. Said yes. Went to S. R.'s & then to Hippodrome. Saw "The j?p in "The Secret Game". Very good. Went to get my serge dress from the cleaners but it was not finished.
Friday, Jan. 25, 1918

Snowed again this morning. Finished work rather early this morning & read newspaper for a while. Had lunch at Dennetts with Miss Gross. G. J. called me up in ref. To going to synagogue this evening. Told her S. R. & I intended going to the Beth El instead. Promised Miss Gross to be over this evening. Pur. 2 sheets & music at Snellenbergs this afternoon. Called S. R. & asked her to be over our house as The Beth El was at 58 & Walnut & we would take the Elevated. She was peeved & didn't want to go so I hung up on her. She called again at 7:20 & said she would be over. We went to Granklin. Recd. Mail from Harry Goodman, Camp Meade. He is not feeling very well.
Saturday, Jan 26, 1918

Much warmer today. Got paid before 12 & paid for sheets & music. Miss Miller left without me & I rode home. Recd. Mail from Gertie Bernstein. Mary & Harry were in N. Y. She also sent me a photo of herself. Wassco came over & we went to Academy of Music to hear the Phila. Orchestra but couldn't get tickets. Started to snow & hail & the weather became very miserable indeed so we decided to go to Coll's. Got there pretty early. Met Lt. Haas there but no one else that I knew. Had a fair time. Stopped in at 5th St. to get something to eat, then went home. I.L. (?) said he & Harry would be at the Appolo & for me to try to be there. Didn't make a definite promise.
Sunday, Jan. 27, 1918

Snowed pretty deep this morning. Got up at 12:30. Made up cretonne curtains for mother's room. Called G. J. but she was upstairs & Gussie answered the phone. She said Gertie had an appointment for the evening & couldn't go with me. Was very cross as she promised not to make any, then deliberately made one herself. S. R. called me just as Abe was calling her & wanted me to come over as soon as possible. Got over about 8 P. M. & had supper there. {short hand} (Went to) Appollo Hall & met Sam Goodreich, Wasso, Harry Cohen & quite a few others. Checked S. R.'s bag. {shorthand} Got in 3:30 A. M. {shorthand} 
 
Monday, Jan. 28, 1918

Snowed again this morning. Elevated cars are running on holiday schedule a/c of Heatless Monday. Got to work OK as I had an express elevated to 15th St. Had lunch at Childs with Miss Gross & G. J. {shorthand} Walked home with (her brother) Irwin & Miss Miller. Met S. R. at her home & she promised to walk over with Gussie Furman, but failed to do so. Went to Franklin alone & saw "Constance Talmage in Scandal." Good. {shorthand} 
Tuesday, Jan. 29, 1918

Much warmer today. Had lunch with Miss Gross at H & H. Pur. 2 bunches of artificial cheries at 5 & 10¢ store. S. R. called in apologies for not being over last night a/c of rain. Read magazine quite a while this afternoon. Just as I was getting ready to go home JGH called me over & wanted to know if I was in a hurry. I said no. {shorthand} Left about 6:45 P.M. & walked home. Went to Hanna Fisnam's with S. R.. (Sewing Circle). {shorthand} 
Wednesday, Jan. 30, 1918

Met Dr. Friedman in Elevated this morning. Had lunch at Snellenburgs alone. Very good. Purchased 2 Union Suits and 6 sheets for mother. (Sale). Spoke to girl tracus ? about what JGH mentioned last night. It seems that they want about $5.00 more. Told JGH it seems he & his wife are interested in social work, etc. Spoke highly of Miss Deacon & Archibald. Wascou called up. {shorthand} 
Thursday, Jan. 31, 1918

Pretty busy all day & tired also. JGH ripped C.C.A up the back. {shorthand} Got tickets for "A cure for Curables". Very good. S. R. & I went. {shorthand}
