Thursday, Aug. 1, 1918

Real fine out today, so I decided to walk. Made it as far as 4th & Jackson St. in 20 min. Pretty good. Miss Carter came in office this morning & told me that my raise had been turned down on a/c of being late & leaving early. Couldn''t understand it so I went up to see her & looked over my record. I must have been leaving early at night, however; she is going to put the raise thru in about 2 weeks. Miss Presser is in the hospital operated on stomach. Girls made a collection for some flowers & I contributed 45¢ . Hooray. Monday is a holiday - 1st ship, (Name of ship) to be launched. Called SR.. She is not going to Red Cross tonight as she is going to the chiropodists & will let me know tomorrow re: Atl. City. Tried to pur waist & hat but didn't succeed. Went to Red Cross. Yetta Simon said she had some nice ones  & I pur. a white georgette waist at 4.75 also white voile waist at 1.50.
Friday, Aug. 2, 1918

Pretty good speed this morning on trolley. Miss Traul brought some work in & I did it for her. Called S.R. & she is gong to Atl. City with me tomorrow. Pressed my skirt & tried to borrow valise . Was unsuccessful. S.R. said I could share hers & I went there. Bessie (Betty) came after me & said mother got one. She borrowed it from a customer of father's. Packed everything & went to bed about 12. About 3 A.M. the Pollocks next door had a fight & I couldn't sleep. Recd.  card from Gertie Bernstein.

Saturday, Aug. 3, 1918

Left my button home & had to wait for Adams to bring me a pass. Was 12 mnits. late. Decided to leave my valise home & go for it instead of dragging it all the way to the Island and back. Asked E.S.C. for permission to go at 12:15 & he refused. Was rather peeved. J.G.H. came in & wanted to know why I was cross & E.S.C. told him. I was then given perm. to go at 12:15. Went down in Jitney - 25 & then on 5 St. car. Had lunch & made boat. S.K., Mr. Fisher & Goodshein came over with her. Met Misses Montran & Jones. We went to Mollie Wolf's home & left our valises there. Went to look for a room. S.K. said Sam Hershenhorn, Jules & rest of boys intended to be out also. Met her Uncle Jack on Boardwalk & he took us tho the Regent (formerly Dunlap) where we got a room. Very nice. He is fixing it up so that we will only have to pay $5.00 for 2 days which is about 1/2 of regular price. On the way back to Mollie's we met the boys & they helped us with our valises. They are stopping at Shletz's across the way from the Regent. Some coincidence. We met them about 9 P.M. Went to Steel Pier. Met the Jaspans, Aaron Levin, Mrs. Apfelbaum & dear knows how many more. Sam Goodrich & Mr. Brickman were also there. Sam expect to go to Camp on Tuesday 8/6/18 - 6:20 A.M. Poor fellow, he looks bad. After the dance 10 of us went to the Marlin Rouge. Got there too late to see any performance & only had one dance. However , we had loads of fun and enjoyed ourselves immensely. We then went to Richard's Pavillion & Jules & I cut up & entertained the bunch. It was about 2 A.M. when we got to bed & I fell asleep just as soon as I touched the bed.
Sunday, Aug. 4, 1918

S.K. & I got up at 10 A.M. Jules & Sam came up to our room & waited outside until we were ready. Went to Virginia baths to get a locker for bathing suit, then went to Childs for breakfast. Will meet the boys on the beach. Called up Mrs. Harris & said we would see her at Grosman's at 4 P.M. Saw quite a number of familiar faces on beach. It was rather cool, but later was much warmer. Went in for a short swim. Put hankie over my nose to keep from getting burnt. Laughter all around. It was about 2:30 when we got back, dressed & went to Mrs. Harris's. Met her mother & sister. Her mother looks about 4 years older than she. Sam Goodrich, Mildred Clemens & Brickman came over to bid her good-bye. Anna also came over. We then went to New Liberty Hotel where S.R.'s mother & father are stopping & had supper there. Pretty swanky. We bid Sam good-bye then went back to hotel. Met Jack there. He got in this P.M.  & met boys on boardwalk. S.K. & I went to change clothes & then Jack & I went to see Ann & Fannie. They were all playing cards. We went to Million Dollar Pier. Too warm to dance. Wanted to go out on back of pier, but sailor guard said it was "too damp out there". Ha, ha, he is a wise sailor. Met S.R.'s mother & father & had some cream. Took a walk. Met G. Jaspan & her sisters. She was telling me of the sights she saw though her window. We wanted to go to cafe, but Sam didn't want to go so we sat on porch of Shlitz's. {shorthand}
Monday, Aug. 5, 1918

S.R. told me that S. Hirshenhorn {shorthand} Boys met us about 8 o'clock & we had breakfast together. Sara & Sam left on 9 o'clock train. Jack & I went to Hygin & then waited for Mrs. Harris on beach but she never came. Met Miss Montran & Mr. Cox on beach also Jaspans. We all went bathing together. {shorthand} We had dinner at about 3:30 & I packed. Took a walk to say good-bye to Mrs. Harris & then over to see Ann. We left on 8 o'clock train and arrived home about 10. It surely was hot. Jack called up Sam Goodrich & was told to come out to his farewell party. I wouldn't go as I was too tired so Jack went alone. Slept on parlor floor as it was very warm & I was sun burnt at that. Recd. card from E.E.L. in France.

Much warmer than yesterday. E.S. Clark told C.C.A. he would be transferred shortly & I was to learn his work & have Mr. Kay assist me. Miss Porter said girls were to be dismissed at 12:30. Went to work without a hat for the first time. C.C.A. goes tomorrow to Net Basin Adm. Bldg. Wish I was going also. Did some of Miss Sprogel's work as she is out all week. Miss Fuller wanted me to do Mr. Wisner's work, but I had no time. Had my hair washed & went to Red Cross. Hanna Markowitz treated the girls on a/c of it being her birthday. Jack called up while I was away. Ann told him I was at S/R/'s & for him to call there. Met Minnie Klein. She has gotten much thinner, but looks pretty good that way.
Friday, Aug. 9, 1918

Miss Traul's birthday. Took a cold bath this morning & feel better. Took charge of Adam's duties. We might let Miller take charge of all blue print orders hereafter. Asked E.S.C. for a transfer, but he refused. Also asked for a week off & he turned me down. Was very much disappointed. Pretty busy on the new job. Went home by boat. Pattern for Rose blew into the river. Stuck around home a while, read, went to the Franklin. Saw "Streets of the Seven Stars". Very good.

Saturday, Aug. 10, 1918

Looks rather cloudy today. Was very busy with blueprint orders & general work. Left at 20 minutes of one. Got home about 1:40. Sat around all afternoon. About 7 P.M.. I got dressed & went to S.R.'s. We went over to Leslie Cohen's home to get inform. re: Betterton, Md. We then went to Ruby & saw Edna Goodrich in "Her Husband's Honor". Not very good. Sunday, Aug. 11, 1918

Lost my Ingersoll wrist watch or it has been stolen. Washed some underwear. Jack came over about 5:30 & I wasn't as yet dressed. He was sore as we expected to meet Irwin & canoeing. Went to S.R.'s & found her asleep. She said Sam Hirshenhorn wanted to be over & would call again later. We tried to get him but were unsuccessful. Had supper. Went to De Lorenzo's. Jack upset a banana split on my white satin skirt but it didn't stain. Took a walk then went home as we were both tired.
Monday, Aug. 12, 1918

Left S.R.'s umbrella with the man next door. I believe it is going to be very warm  today. Sent a catalogue of French Picture Exhibition to L. Wassco. Wrote Betterton House, Idelwile Inn and Emerson Hotel at Betterton, MD. re: Rates for 1 wk. Wrote Sam Auerbach. C.C.A. was in this A.M. He said there was a opening in his department & to see Miss Porter about it. J.G.H. came in this P.M. & said to lay low as he wouldn't forget his friends. Guess I'll keep still for a while. It started to rain as I left the office & by the time I got to the ferry I was soaked to the skin. Miss Traul went home for a week - sick. Went to Franklin & saw a good picture.
Tuesday, Aug. 13, 1918

Called S.R. & told her I made an appointment to go swimming at 6:45 & I'll wait for her. Had lunch in rest room with girls. Discussed dreaming. Didn't have much to do today. Croched & sat around a while. #45 cars delayed - no power. Thought I would never get to the YMCA. Met S.R. & we both took a lesson. Miss Ferris taught us. Dreamed during the night. I suppose discussing it this afternoon caused it.

Wednesday, Aug. 14, 1918

Cooler today. Feel rather sick in my stomach. Wonder if it is the spiced beef I had yesterday for lunch. C.C.A. came in about 12.30. Said someone in his Dept. has been asking Miss Parker for me. Had lunch in cafeteria. Wrote E.E.L.  J.G.H. called to know whether I  had any orders to leave. Said no. He assured me there was no need for me to worry as I was expected to be transferred as soon as E.S.C. could release me. Rain again & went home by boat. A hurricane came up as we docked at Gloucester. Ropes broke, windows smashed & water rushed in. Girls became hysterical & general commotion all around. At first we thought boat was sinking but everything turned out O.K. Transferred to Glouchester boat to go home. Wash woman refused to wash my clothes so I had to get busy. Sadie Fisher & sister were over. Lent her a bathing suit.
