Monday, April 1, 1918 

Came to work - elevated until 13th, # 11 car in subway until 49th & Woodland, then on #37 to 94th St, then shuttle line. I think it is too much. Will come on train in the future. Did quite a bit of embroidery. Spoke to Mr. Carson of Empl. Bureau re. position for father. Was told to send him down. Rode home in trains. Engineering stenogs. conferred re. dinner at Miss Prissman's in the near future. Mailed letter to Ed & Hog Island News to Miss Conwell. Went to dentists & then to movies. Saw "The Auction Block". Good.
 
Tuesday, April 2, 1918 

Phoned S.R. was too tired to see her this evening. Got off at  12 M & took shuttle train & cars for town. Thought I would never get there. Pur. hankies, gloves & flowers for hat. Wanted to get leghorn (?) shape but they are too expensive. Told Rose (Bleedens) to order one for me. Recd. card from Herman Zeidner who is visiting, no doubt, at Phoenixville. Had a tooth pulled & went to bed early as the gums pained me.


Wednesday, April 3, 1918 

Came up via 24th & Chestnut. Had lunch in office as it was raining at noon & I didn't want to get wet. Had lots of work this afternoon. Miss Sprogel, Frank & I went home via shuttle & made fine time. Reached home 6:25. We discussed {short hand}. Went to Rose (Bleeden) for hat & discovered she wanted too much. Stopped in Bleedens & ordered one. S.R. & I went to Hippodrome. Saw Pauline Fre dwick in Madam Jealousy. Fair. Was very sleepy & couldn't wait to get home.

Thursday, April 4, 1918 

Met Miss Tranel & Sprogel in subway at 13th. Made good time. Got in office at 8:50. Was pretty busy all morning. Went to lunch in Mess Hall, but was disappointed as we had no music. Miss Pressman gave me part of her Easter egg which I ate during the afternoon. Good. Embroidered a while. Went home via shuttle & made good time. Stopped in Bleden's & she said she wouldn't be in town before next week. If I don't need a hat for Sunday will meet her. Stopped in Dentist's & met Mrs. Kline & Reba. They were very inquisitive. Went to bed at 9:15 P.M.


Friday, April 5, 1918 

Met Miss Tranel & Sprogel in subway at 7:30. Miss Tranel & I left earlier intending to make the 8:15 shuttle but as it pulled out at 8:14 we missed it. Walked as far as Tinicum Ave. & met an automobile. They took us into the Island. Got in at 8:30. Some surprise. Ethel R. told me that Barney Chestack enlisted in the Naval Reserve. Had cramps all afternoon. Went over to see Dr. Adams & she gave me some medicine & fixed my boil. Was told to see her tomorrow. Rode home in the shuttle & made good time. Recd. letter from Ed. He will be in town. Went to S.R.'s & stopped into Bleeden's for a hat. Had cream & went to bed.
 
Saturday, April 6, 1918 

Made 8:15 shuttle this morning. Phoned milliner to change color of facing of hat from pink to putty color as it will match my shoes. J.G.H gave me permission to make 4:25 train. Goody! No music in mess hall today. Miss Traub & I left on 4 o'clock shuttle. Stopped in for my hat & discovered she had used wrong shade of braid & the shape was all dented so I wouldn't take it. {short hand} 

Sunday, April  7, 1918 

Got up at 9:45. Went to dentists.  {short hand} 





 

 

Monday, April 8, 1918

Made 8.15 shuttle this morning.  Finished centre piece of French knots & feeling pretty good today. S.R. & I saw "Oh, Boy" at the Lyric. Pretty good but not quite up to my expectations. Had a sundae in Evans and rode home.


Tuesday, April 9, 1918 

Miss Tranel, Sprogeil and I missed 8.15 shuttle. Met Barzner & Fuller in machine at Tinicum Ave. & rode & Island with them. Music and dancing in Men Hall today.
Crochet some lace on scarf as I didn't have much to do. It is raining hard all day & we all feel miserable. Went to Franklin & saw "Checking the Public". Very good.

Wednesday, April 10, 1918

Rain  again today & it is miserable & cold out. Made 8.25 shuttle. Bus brought us to and from Mess Hall - a/c wind and rain. Certainly is nasty out. J.G.H. out all day a/c cold. Read & crocheted for a while. Pur. hat. It is black with tan facing & I will put my poppies on same. Am to call for it tomorrow. Went to S.R.'s. Her aunt May was there and Hannah came in later.




Thursday, April 11, 1918 

Block on cars & therefore they were late. Walked as far as Tinicum Ave. then were picked up in machine. Everybody late today. Certainly hailing some this P.M. Got permission from J.G.H. to go home Saturday afternoon. Haven't had off for about 3 months. Called S.R. to advise her I wouldn't be off this afternoon. She will try to be over this evening. Music & dancing in Mess Hall today. Hail & snow all day & it was terrible going home. S.K. didn't come over a/c of weather. {short hand} Went to bed at 8:30.
 
Friday, April 12,1918

Nasty again this morning. Had lunch in Mess Hall. Read mail from Ed. He said not to come down to Camp Sunday as he would be up. Mother not feeling very well & Baby due. Hope it comes soon.




 
Saturday, April 13, 1918

News -  Stork  brought me a baby brother this morning. Everybody happy. Spoke to L.K. over phone. She will be over this evening. Miss Troub & I left on 11:50 shuttle. Pur. candy for mother in Wannamaker's. Pur. flanel & material for 2 shirtwaists on 4th & Bainbridge. Made nightie etc for baby. Told S.R.'s folks of our new baby & they were very much surprised. SK. made a shirtwaist at our house. She promised to be over tomorrow.

Sunday, April  14, 1918 

Very nice out today. {short hand} No word fro S.R. Sent my watch back to Factory 315 4th Ave. N.Y. Wrote Grandma & rest of folks in New York about birth of baby. Started one of my waists. Have a headache all day. Am feeling not at all like myself.



Monday, April 15, 1918 

Miss Sprogel & I left without Miss Travil this morning. Made 8:15. Started a blue silk sweater for baby. Have a sore throat so I went over to see Dr. Young & she sprayed it. S.R. came over & we took a walk. Met Sadie Summers & Lena ? at Model soliciting subscript. for Liberty Bonds. She tried to "Throw the Bull" but it didn't sink with S.R. & I. Got weighed at Farmers. I - 120. S.R. - 125 1/2.

Tuesday, April 16, 1918 


Miss Tranel and I left without Miss Sprogel .Missed 8:15. Got into a machine but discovered it was going to Westinghouse & we had to get out, so we waited for shuttle. Read "The Golden House" all afternoon. Finished my waist. United States in war one year today.



Wednesday, April 17, 1918 

Met Miss Leonard at 49 & Woodland in Mr.Harper's Dodge and I went along with them. Enjoyed the ride very much. Spoke to S.K. over phone. She wants me to go to Business Show at Armory this evening. Pur. eclair at Mess Hall for her. Recd. mail from Bessie Fields. She is leaving shortly to accept a position with Media Bank. S.R. said Hershenhorn boys will go to show with us. They came & we went. Fair - same as last year. Got to bed at 12.
 
Thursday, April 18, 1918

Walked in to office from 94St  It rained & Miss Montran & I walked very fast, therefore was very warm. Told J.G.H. that I would have to be off all day Saturday on a/c briss. OK. Was very tired when I got home. Met Aunt Katie on South St. coming from our house.

Friday, April 19, 1918

Made 8.15 shuttle but certainly did run some to make it. Adams off this afternoon. S.R. & I saw  "Doing our Bit" at the Chestnut St. Opera House. Very good.




Saturday, April 20, 1918

Didn't report at office this morning. Briss. Baby named  Shimen Pasich. S.K. called  at 1 P.M.. I promised to meet her at 3:30 - 4 in Wanamaker's  waiting room. Liberty Loan parade of Red Cross. Very nice. S.K. never showed up. Pur. Lisaice Builder & cotton to finish blue baby sweater. Raining very hard this evening. Jack came over and we stayed home. Asked him to come over tomorrow as S.R. and B.Z. were also coming. Sadie Fisher staid over night. I scarcely slept a wink.
 
Sunday, April 21, 1918

Was chief cook and bottle washer today. It certainly is raining hard, it is somewhat chilly out. S.K. came, also Jack but B.Z. didn't. This is the 2nd time he has disappointed her & if  it were me  I wouldn't bother. My I got some surprise today. Wassco called me up to advise me that he was to report for military duty on next Friday &  Harry might enlist. Jack, S.K. and I had some argument- re. war & religion with Ann. Harry & Jack had argument re. socialism. They left about 1.30.

 

Monday, April 22, 1918

Made 8.15 shuttle this morning. Worked on baby sweater a while & afternoon went quickly. {short hand} Mailed Hog Is. news to ed & girls. There is a piece in it re. Adams. {short hand} Went to S.R.'s but she is going to a ball with her Uncle Jack & Aunt May. Ethel, Hanna & I had cream & went to Hanna's home. Met Bessie Ellis (Sam's girl).  Discussed business with Gussie. 

Tuesday, April 23,1918

Moved in back wing of Administration Bldg. this morning. Excitement & confusion galore. {short hand} Called S.R. to advise her that I wouldn't be over tonight to attend Police Carnival as I was too tired. Stayed home & cut out my stripped shirt-waist.




 

Wednesday, April 24, 1918

{short hand} Had a fair amount of work today. {short hand} Started to sew my waist but had to go downstairs as no one there to mind the store. Went to Franklin for a change. Bill was not very good.




Thursday, April 25, 1918

Engineering girls want to go to Theatre next Tuesday and have dinner in town. Collected 55¢ for tickets as I will be in town this afternoon. Called S.R.. She is willing to go also. Have this afternoon off. Pur. 14 tickets lace, silk for sweater, paid Piano bill etc. Met Emma Ricklin on Chestnut  St. {short hand} Wrote Ed. S.K. came in. We took a walk,, had cream & she went home at 9.30.
 
Wassco left for camp Friday, April 26, 1918

Freight train prevented my making 8.15 shuttle, so a bunch of us all walked in. Some girls object to having dinner at "The Asia" on a/c of the raidings etc. Have decided to eat at the Hog Island Hotel if they can accommodate us. Write Ingersoll Co. re. my watch mailed 4/14. Liberty Day - today but as usual we had to work. Called Hotel but they want $1.00 up for special dinner. Paid card from Graphic Sketch Club re. exhibition of Paintings. Went to S.R.'s had cream.  Met Weiss coming home & he took me home. Mother came downstairs this evening.

Saturday, April 27, 1918

Feeling rather shaky this morning. Stomach feels upset. No salary today as it is bring held back a/c transfer to Work's Payroll. Am certainly tired from doing nothing this afternoon. Received card from Ed stating that he wouldn't be home tomorrow. Took a nap & didn't get up until 10 P.M. Had something to eat, crocheted a little & went to bed again. S.K. failed to come over.




 
Sunday, April 28, 1918

S.R. called & said she would be over. Jack also came. We took a walk, had some cream, & stopped back at S.R.'s.  Her cousin Lillie was there . Sam & Jule dropped in. He had been over our house & was sent to S.R.'s. Nat & Bob also came in. S.K. & bunch of girls were headed for Van Glider's but Jack, Herman & I went home as it was too late. Finished waist.

Monday, April 29, 1918

S.R. came over in the evening. She said the entire old crowd were over last night at Rose's. Sorry almost that I didn't go. Sewed clasps on my waist. J.G.H. off this afternoon & I had plenty of time to crochet. {short hand}

 


Tuesday, April 30, 1918

J.G.H. out all day. finished nightgown yoke with birds on it. Recd. card from Ingersoll Co. to the effect that they rec. my watch for repairs. Engineering bunch including S.R. had dinner at Boothby's & then saw Cohen Review. Pretty good. Miss Peters received a diamond ring today. She certainly is happy. Miss Tranel  has on the blues about hers. Raining very hard as we went out, however I didn't get very much wet as I had an umbrella.
